Doris CHOWN Obituary

Peacefully passed away on December 10, 2021, at the Royal Henley Retirement Residence with family by her side. Doris Mary Chown (née Mikkelborg) was born on Christmas Eve, 1928 and grew up on a farm near Zealandia, Saskatchewan. As the second youngest of six siblings she spoke fondly of her childhood years where milking the cows, collecting hens' eggs and driving the truck (at age 12!) were part of everyday life. Throughout her long life she was influenced by her parents' hardy resourcefulness and strong work ethic. She embraced progressive change and liberal values. Family was her greatest joy. In 1952 Doris graduated from nursing at the University of Saskatchewan and moved east one year later to join her older brother in St. Catharines, ON, working as Supervisor of Pediatric Nursing in the brand-new Hotel Dieu Hospital. Doris met Mackenzie Chown at a Liberal Party meeting and they married in 1955. They raised five children and Doris ran a busy, happy household, fitting in time for bridge and participating in Mac's life as a lawyer and as mayor of St. Catharines (1968-1972). The cottage they built in Muskoka became a family gathering place and Doris relished any opportunity to use her practical skills: swinging a hammer, cutting firewood, gardening and baking cinnamon buns or waffles for a crowd - and she always delighted in winning at cards or Scrabble! Although Mac died far too soon (1983) Doris went on to live a full life and loved having her children and grandchildren around her at the cottage or her Southgate condo, going on trips with friends or to see family, and becoming a bridge master. Doris is predeceased her husband, Mackenzie Chown, her parents (Mary and Charles Mikkelborg) and her sisters Frieda Gray (George), Mildred Locke (Grant) and Edith Heuser (Neil) and brother Gordon (Dora). Doris is survived by her brother Charles Mikkelborg (Gwen) of Calgary. Doris is also survived by her dear companion/partner of many years, Stuart Wilson. Doris will be dearly missed by her children David (Karen), Nancy Balcom (Jim), Donald (Linda), Bob (Mary Ellen) and Roger (Martha), her loving grandchildren: Chantal Richardet (Adam), Trevor and Lauren Chown; Kristen (Seth Hollar) and David Balcom; Sarah, Katelyn, and Laura (Chris Bartels) Chown; Dan, Erin, and Andrew Chown; Mackenzie (Kylee Hinde) and Emma Chown, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held for Doris on Saturday, December 18 at 2p.m. at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St Catharines. In accordance with COVID protocols you are required to register with the funeral home in advance (please call 905-937-4444) and will be required to show your vaccine passport/I.D. before entering the funeral home. Seating for the celebration of Life is limited to 125 people. For everyone's safety, wearing masks and social distancing measures will be required. Live streaming will be available for those unable to attend the funeral service. Following the service, the family will be available for a limited visitation in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way Niagara.

I have many good memories of Doris. We were room mates for two years at U of S in Saskatoon. Doris was also my bridesmaid at my wedding in 1952. We have kept in touch over the years and we´re delighted to become even closer relations through David and Karen. It is a friendship I cherish and will keep in my heart. Donna.

David, Nancy, Don, Bobby & Roger,
We were so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mum. We have so many fond memories of happy times spent together over our lifetimes. In fact, the credit for the lives of Kelley, Colleen & Paul Quinlan goes to your Mum & Dad who introduced Tom to Jane! We've included a few precious moments from our shared memories. We know how hard it is to say goodbye. Our deepest sympathy to you all.
With love,
Kelley, Colleen & Paul Quinlan

We found this lovely wedding photo of Doris & Mac, where Jane soon-to-be Quinlan (our Mom) is bridesmaid. Early on in a life-long friendship that brought our families close together. Thinking of you.

Doris was always a beacon of light and joy in our family, ready with her infectious laughter and quick wit. For me personally, she represented the great matriarch who provided a steady hand and loving kindness to all of her loved ones. She will be greatly missed!

I was very saddened to learn that Doris has passed away and my heart goes out to all the family. I have many wonderful memories of living next door to the Chown family . I was only 12 when we became neighbours , and my parents, Jim and Vi Titko, became good friends and neighbours of Mac and Doris for many years. Doris was a mentor to me in many ways as I grew into a teenager and young adult! She always showed interest in the happenings and ideas in our young lives ...she took an interest in all the neighbourhood girls! She trusted my sister and myself to babysit her five lively little ones! Such a busy household! She was a strong woman , engaged in the community and in Canadian politics, involving my mom in the election campaigns! I looked up to her and eventually followed in her footsteps becoming an RN as well, with a career in Public Health. We were in touch through the years and she continued to visit my parents as they aged in a Retirement Home. Our last meeting was in 2018 with a few of the other neighbourhood girls. I had hoped I would see her again. The photo below was taken that day. Doris will always have a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you all...David, Nancy, Donald, Bobby, Roger and all your families. Losing a mother is a very profound loss .....my deepest condolences, from Janet ( Titko ) .

My sympathies to the Chown family on their loss of Doris. I co-volunteered with her husband Mac on the United Way and came to appreciate the dedication to public service held by both them.
