Edward McKENNA Obituary

Edward (Ted) McKenna lived all his 99 years in St. Catharines before his passing on February 17, 2023 in his 100th year. Ted was born November 20, 1923 and attended former St. Mary's School in Western Hill and the St. Catharines Collegiate where Yvette fell in love with the team's star basketball player "Red" McKenna and married after he returned from war in 1948. After graduation, Ted joined the Canadian Army, trained in Canada and England serving with the Canadian Grenadier Guards Armoured Corps ending in Normandy in a Sherman tank as gunner and wireless operator. He was employed by General Motors for 46 years and retired in 1989 as a Tool & Die Inspector. Ted had three loves, God, family and his garden.
He is survived by his loving children: Kevin, Mary (Donald) Inverarity, Patricia, Sean (Shelly) and Kathleen (William) Schenck; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Yvette Marie (nee Tessier), sister Glenys and brother James; parents Francis and Margaret (nee Lynch) McKenna. The family wish to express their gratitude to Doctor J. Child and the nurses and staff at Linhaven Home as well the caring neighbours on Henrietta Street. In accordance with Ted's wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church at a date to be announced.
Ted and Yvette were longtime parishioners of St. Mary's. Ted's father, Frank was instrumental in the building of St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church in 1904.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be donated to Meals on Wheels Niagara and/or the Carmelite Sisters.

My sincere condolences to the entire McKenna family. Over the last forty years I heard all your names but have no addresses. Yvette & Ted were the most wonderful travelers, who came with us overseas. And if it wasn't planning travels, we chatted about the good old days, sipped tea and went home with squash from Ted's wonderful garden. And in later years we chatted on the porch with Ted reminiscing about his long married life. May he rest in peace and be reunited with his loving wife Yvette. I thank God for having had the privilege to know T&Y. Wishing the McKenna siblings strength and courage to step in their (grand) parents' footsteps.

My condolences to the entire McKenna family. I always enjoyed chatting with Ted, in his soft-spoken tones, as he came in from the garden at Henrietta Street while I was visiting Pat and Yvette over a cup of tea. His full, long life was certainly a blessing to everyone around him.
