George Hostick Obituary

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother and Friend. George left this Earth early on Monday October 10th, at the age of 84, after a brief illness related to his ongoing battle with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia.
He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years Nancy, his son Brian (Terry - and her girls Stephanie, Robyn and Jennifer), sister Doreen (Vic), step-sons Mark Ferris (Lindsay) and Blair Ferris (Alison), and he was Grandpa/Mosha to 7 grandchildren. George also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and a large community of friends who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents George Sr. and Helen, brother John Hostick, sister Jean Brown Carlo, and first wife Alice.
George was born on June 11, 1938. He grew up in Merritton - which would always be home base in his heart no matter where he lived.
His professional life was spent in Hydro front offices. First as Treasurer in Merritton, then St. Catharines PUC, GM at North Bay Hydro and finally GM at Niagara Falls Hydro until his retirement.
Outside of his career though, George lived to serve the community. He was a lifelong member of the Merritton Lions Club - moving through the club level positions until becoming District A2 Governor in 1982. George also served as Chairman of the Lions Foundation of Canada. Lionism was a movement he truly loved - and spread the good word about whenever he could.
George's service to the community didn't just involve the Lions. He was also at various times the Chair of the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights - and Chair of the Niagara Rehab Centre.
He loved his sports teams - and the Blue Jays, Leafs and Bills kept him equally entertained and frustrated for many long years.
His first wife Alice brought him to St. George's Anglican Church while they were courting - and he has been a lifelong member ever since. George found great strength in his faith and we take comfort in the knowledge that he is in a much better place now - with no more pain or confusion.
Our kind, gentle, loving best friend - a quintessential gentleman - has moved on - but his memory, and legacy, will live in all that were lucky enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in George's name may be made to the Niagara United Way - an organization he strongly supported - at www.unitedwayniagara.org.
As George had planned, cremation has already taken place through Passfield Mortuary. Funeral Liturgy and Interment of Ashes will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, St. Catharines on Friday October 21st at 2 PM. (No reception afterwards) A Celebration of a life well lived will be held Saturday, October 29th at Coppola's Banquet Hall, Carlton St, St. Catharines from 2 to 5pm. A short 'formal' programme will take place at 3pm. All who knew George are invited!

My condolences to Nancy and family,
I have many fond memories of George through the Lions Club. I became friends with George and Alice many years ago as we volunteered at events and attended many Lions Conferences. I might even still have one of George's campaign buttons when he was running for District A2 Governor.
My deepest sympathies

So very sad to hear about George's passing. I have known him most of my life as I lived across the road from him and his family when I was young. He was always such a very special person and did such great things in his life, especially the Merritton Parade, the Merritton Lions and the Winter Festival of Lights. He was always there and worked so hard. I speak for the MacLachlan family and rest in peace, George, and I will still look for you down at Port Dalhousie walking with Nancy.
