Loving mother of Karin Philp (Paul) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Carl Burkett (Janice) of Kanata, Ontario; the late Cheryl Tilson (2018) (Mark); Nancy Butler (Kirby) of Breslau, Ontario, and Lori Smith (Glen) of Mississauga, Ontario. Loved GMA of Corey Philp (Brianne) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Kelly Burkett (Mike Felczak) of Kanata, Ontario, Andrew Burkett (Jennifer Stannard) of Toronto, Ontario, Lauren Guerrero (Rod) of Kanata Ontario, Jonathan Butler (Rachel Smitjes) of Hamilton, Ontario, Lindsay Sinclair (Spencer) of Binbrook, Ontario, Zachary and Cameron Smith of Mississauga, Ontario. Loved GGMA of Peighton and Nolan Philp, Adrian Felczak, Jose Burkett, Hayden, Cody and Jordi Guerrero, and Harper Sinclair. Predeceased by her parents Frederick and Theresa Stuckless (Rowsell) and brother Martin Stuckless. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Janet was born March 16, 1932, in Cornerbrook Newfoundland. During her time there Janet worked for a period for the Post Office in Newfoundland, delivering telegrams and then moved on to work in a Herring Factory packing sardines in cans. In 1948 she married Floyd, 3rd Mate on the Great Lakes & Gulf of St Lawrence vessel, Birchton. After marriage she left the Rock and moved to Floyd's hometown of Port Colborne to start their life. After moving to Port Colborne, Janet was busy taking care of family and homelife. She was involved at First Lutheran Church and the East Side Ladies Auxiliary for over 30 years. After Floyd's passing in 1991 she became an active member of the community, spending her time volunteering at Arabella's Tea Room, Northland Pointe and as one of Santa's Helpers. Janet's outstanding efforts and timeless hours devoted to serving her community was recognized in 2012 and she was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family and friends. She loved to dance and sing, play Yahtzee, Sequence, work on puzzles and meeting new people. She described herself as "ambitious" and "sharp as a tack." She was a true Newfie at heart, and was known for her down to earth and straightforward approach, hidden humour, and kindness towards those around her. The family would like to extend thanks and appreciation to Welland County Hospital Emergency Department, Dr. Gavin Mazzetti and Portal Village Staff and Dr. E. Wilson. We will be forever grateful for their support and compassion for caring for our mother. Cremation has taken place. The Burkett family will receive visitors at the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Saturday, August 27, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral service will follow in the Davidson Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Bart Coleman officiating.
