Joan Olmstead Obituary

1926 - 2022

It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful and beloved Mother, Joan Kathryn Olmstead in her 96th year after a lengthy and brave battle with Alzheimer's/Dementia. Mom passed away peacefully at home surrounded with love and in the arms of her loving son David on Saturday, August 20, 2022. Cherished and devoted Mom to Rebecca and her husband Peter Jones, Amy Olmstead, Dawn Olmstead, David Olmstead and Nancy Olmstead. Adored Nana to Ryan (Julia) Glaves, Rory (Christine) Glaves, Annette (Matt) Lyons and Courtney (Jake) Olmstead. Loved Great Nana to Owen and Lily Glaves, Charlotte and Harrison Lyons. Dearest and beloved friend and former spouse of David J. Olmstead. Fondly remembered by her cousins and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her beloved parents Leonard and Thelma Watson (nee Nobles). And her best friend and sister Leonarda Reber. Mom had a wonderful childhood growing up on the family fruit farm in Queenston/St. David's where the mountain and Queenston Heights Park was her playground. Mom excelled in swimming, winning competitions and also played the piano and became very accomplished. Mom played for us all the time and we especially loved it at Christmas. From Queenston Mom went to NFCVI high school in Niagara Falls where she received a secretarial/business diploma. Mom worked in notable law, real estate and insurance offices in the city. Mom was proud to have worked for the Brandscombe Family in the early 1950's. Mom was a very kind and caring person. She was very wise and had a great sense of humour with a quick wit. Mom loved to read especially historical books and about the Royal families of Britain and Europe. She had a great passion for music, her plants and gardens and loved her crossword puzzles and was quite the wordsmith. Mom loved to travel, was up for anything and an avid people watcher although never liked herself being the centre of attention. Mom's greatest love was her family, her children and her home. She embraced her grandchildren and great grandchildren with lots of love, affection and pride. Mom was the centre of our world and our rock. We are thankful, grateful and feel privileged to have been able to care for Mom and that she passed away peacefully in her own home. We would like to thank Dr. Dan Dargavel and the many PSWs of Paramed for their kind and compassionate care. Arrangements have been entrusted to MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls. As per Joan's wishes cremation has taken place. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Joan's Life in the near future. Donations made to Alzheimer's Society of Niagara Region and Meals on Wheels are greatly appreciated by the Olmstead family.

It is with deep sadness to hear that Joan has passed on, as part of the neighborhood in the 70's & 80's ! We had many neighborhood gatherings in which Joan was a part of the many holiday celebrations! We lived on a friendly street with loving families (across from their home) Joan's children Dave, Dawn, Rebecca and Amy always took the time to chat! Joan was very proud of her children and we are happy to be a part of their neighbors ! Our prayers are with Dave & the children and grandchildren! Rest in Peace Joan !!

Many memories of your dearMom, Nana and friend. Always a welcoming smile and kindness when we saw Nana. Favourite memory, Ryan and Julia's wedding in Cancun. Spending time people watching on the beach. Nana and David checking into the resort. Nana quickly correcting the front desk re sleeping arrangement. Two beds required- " I am not a cougar, this is my favourite son". Always a twinkle in her eye. Rest In Peace Nana.
