Lloyd Kubis Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Lloyd Kubis announce his sudden passing on January 2, 2022, at the NHS-St. Catharines Hospital. Lloyd, born October 1st, 1938, leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Suzanne, cherished children Robert and Wendy (Michael), loving grandchildren Melissa (Derek), Kayleigh, Robbie, great-grandson Nathan, and sister Betty (Don) Campbell. Lloyd was predeceased by his brothers John and Steve.

At an early age, Lloyd developed a love for amateur radio that became a lifelong passion, communicating around the world under his various call signs: VE3 ERQ and VE3 NUU-B in Canada, 9V1ZI in Singapore, and VK3 BGW in Australia. His adventurous spirit saw him at the helm of sail boats in Canada, a sea going trawler in Singapore and eventually power catamarans in Australia.

Lloyd graduated from the University of Windsor with an Honours B.A.Sc., joined Motorola, and earned his Professional Engineer license.

At Motorola, Lloyd was instrumental in progressing many technologies used in our daily lives such as cellular phones, pagers, and commercialized satellites. His lifelong career with the company took him all over the world establishing operations in Australia, developing major communication systems in Canada, managing government relations, and was promoted to MCEI Vice-President and Regional Director Government Relations - Asia Pacific, relocating to Singapore.

In keeping with Lloyd's wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME and cremation has taken place. A memorial will take place at a later date. Please consider making a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Lloyd's honour. Online Guestbook: www.georgedartefuneralhome.com

Thank you for everyone who has posted.

This was quite sudden and a shock to us all. The good that can come from this is knowing that my Dad didn't suffer a long battle. We will have a ceremony for him later in the year (summer) in his hometown of Kingsville as his brother had also recently passed and family had just traveled up and we didn't want to burden everyone with this again.

73's to my Dad, I can't tell you how much I miss him, and thank you to everyone that has posted.

Sincere condolences to Suzanne, Wendy and Robert on Lloyd's passing. I worked with Lloyd at Motorola on Steeles Avenue, he was so proud of the work Motorola did with two-way radios, phones and cell phones in particular. I remember him for his hard work as well as his wicked sense of humour.

I'm so sorry to hear of Lloyd's passing. I first met Lloyd in Ottawa in the mid eighties when we were both on the same government standards committee, he was working for Motorola and I was with Bell. Later when he moved to St. Catharines and I moved to Port Colborne we met again at the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio club and renewed old memories. My latest association with Lloyd was at a "flea market" in September selling amateur equipment out of our cars. He and I were parked next to each other and enjoyed a good time together. Rest in peace, Lloyd, you'll truly be missed by many people.

I worked and socialized with Lloyd and Suzanne for four years in Singapore in the late 1990's. At work, Lloyd was up for any challenge and had a talent for getting things done in complicated circumstances. My wife and I always enjoyed being with them outside the office and have stayed in touch during their moves to Australia and back to Canada. My sincere condolences to Suzanne and the entire Kubis family.

Our deepest sympathy to our friend Suzanne. Although I had known Lloyd for some 50 years I had never had the opportunity to meet his children but at this difficult time we wish to extend our deepest sympathy to them.
My memories of Lloyd go back to EEMAC to which Motorola and my company were members. At one of our annual convections sometime in the 80´s Lloyd came to the meeting in what appeared to be an ill fitting suit. In the his jacket breast pocket Lloyd was carrying the first commercial available cell phone. Heavy, was an understatement! Lloyd was so proud to introduce us to the latest technology know to man.
The cell phone industry has come so far in the following years and Lloyd has been front and centre of Motorola´s emergence as a leader in the cell phone technology.
Lloyd and I were avid boaters, we both owned trawlers. When Ruth and I were visiting Lloyd and Suzanne in Singapore he arranged a private visit to the Grand Banks trawler factory which was a rare allowance for the manufacture. Lloyd´s influence was everywhere!
Memories are wonderful to own. Ruth and I are lucky enough to have them and are happy to share one of our memories.

I was saddened to read of Lloyds passing, I had just talked to him after doing an online meeting with the Niagara Club and we were going to work on 1296 Mhz in the contest. I've known Lloyd since I first got on the air in 1969... through activities, RABC and much more... RIP 73 Dana

Lloyd has left a big void in my life. We shared many conversations, and kept in touch frequently. I will always value his expertise, and the many discussions we had. I've attached an image of one of the things Lloyd enjoyed doing.
