We are sad to announce the passing of Maurice Barette on July 11, 2022 due to complications after surgery. Maurice is survived by his wife, Cathy of almost 44 years, his daughters Christa and Jeanine (Terrence) and his granddaughters, Tessa and Alice.
Maurice was born in Dieppe, France, and spent his childhood between Paris and the Dieppe countryside. As a young adult, Maurice learned the ins and outs of many aspects of the restaurant industry as he worked in fine dining restaurants throughout Europe. Maurice's thirst for adventure took him many places. A fond memory for him was his
experience opening and running a food truck on the island of Martinique with a close friend from France. A funny story he liked to share was that they were unable to find wooden skewers for the shish-ka-bobs they sold, so they used the spokes from old bicycle wheels.
In 1972, Maurice immigrated to Canada, wanting to explore and experience living in a new country. His travels would eventually lead him to Banff to work at the Banff Springs Hotel. He and Cathy met and would be inseparable from that point on. They were blessed with two little girls before returning to Cathy's native, Niagara in 1981.
During the 1980's into the 1990's, Maurice and Cathy operated a fine dining restaurant in Port Colborne where they made friendships that are still lasting today. Maurice would go on to hold employment in various restaurants throughout Niagara, until his retirement in 2010. In his retirement, Maurice watched his granddaughters and could be found cooking remarkable meals of seafood and filet mignon. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage workshop building model boats and could be found putzing around his yard tending to the landscaping.
Maurice's charm and charisma is most remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had the ability to
lighten every room he occupied. His carefree demeanor and his free spirit made it impossible not to love him. His infectious laugh and upbeat personality made him the life of the party, often found dancing and singing with his friends and family at every occasion. We know Maurice's spirit will always be with us at every gathering as he wouldn't have missed a party for anything.
In keeping with Maurice's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Maurice's life will be held at Essentials Niagara Falls on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 6:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m. If desired, donations in memory of Maurice may be made to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.
