Phil MAZZONE Obituary

Surrounded by the enduring strength of his family, Phil Mazzone, 86, a lifelong resident of the local Niagara Falls community, passed away peacefully at his home, on January 6, 2022. His family was everything and more to him. It was his foundation and greatest joy in life. Born to hard-working Italian immigrants, Dominic and Catharina in 1935, he later met the love of his life, Norma Pasco, and married in 1958. She would be with him through thick and thin, supporting his career in Education, raising a family and becoming his tireless and amazing caregiver in his final years. He is survived by his wife Norma, their three children and spouses, Jeff Mazzone and Liane Middleton, Peter and Kim Mazzone, Marci and Sean Hilliker, and five grandchildren, Lucas, Morgan, Zachary, Jordan and Maela to complete the pieces of his immediate family puzzle. As well, he is survived by his terrific sister Flora Kennedy (Don), his incredible brother Nick Mazzone (Shirley), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and in-laws, including Mary Ferro (Frank), Angelo Pasco (deceased) (Anne), and Carmel Aleo (deceased). He is predeceased by his eldest sister, Rose Saldarelli (Tony). Lastly, he is survived by the extended family grand-pet dogs, Maiya and Maggie, who are now pondering who will feed them their people-food instead of Papa. His life crossed paths with many people in the community of Niagara Falls for decades. Perhaps you knew of a person or were one of those to whom he made a difference. His loss will be immeasurable to his family, friends and acquaintances. He had a true gift of 'giving back', in the most selfless manner possible. His code of life was to 'never give up', 'never lose faith', 'stick to it', and never stop supporting and believing in those so gracious to accept the wisdom and advice he would impart upon an individual. Phil Mazzone was a leader and a revered mentor. He was a graduate of NFCVI High School, Assumption University of Windsor and Niagara University where he received a Master of Education. His career as an educator started as a high school teacher, teaching primarily at A.N.Myer for two decades, followed by his work in Career and Skills Development with the Niagara South Board of Education. He later worked with the Professional Hockey Players Association (PHPA), developing the Career Enhancement Program for professional hockey players. He honed his skills and natural abilities to relate to and connect with those in need. Like a ripple in still water, his guidance would reverberate with hundreds of people for decades. He was dedicated to helping students to launch their careers and making decisions to further their education, while gaining fresh perspectives on the challenges of life. He did this to make his world a better place, generously offering his time and life-long support. In 2012, he was the first person to be inducted as a Builder into the A.N.Myer Wall of Distinction He was recognized in 2015 with the naming of the Phil Mazzone Sports Complex at A.N.Myer. In 2018, his achievements earned him a place on the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame. His professional success could only be matched by his personal success with his family. He loved his family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, especially sitting in his daughter's backyard by the pool, watching his grandchildren laugh and have fun. He loved to attend his children's and then grandchildren's sporting events and theatrical performances. He loved to watch his Pittsburgh Steelers, instilling the appreciation of the team with his family. He was a voracious reader of books of many interesting topics, particularly history and mystery. He loved his routines and rituals of frequent meet-ups for coffee with friends and family, weekly poker games and pizza dinners. Let's not forget about golfing with him, where six-foot putts were considered gimmes. He had a terrific sense of humour, loving to bring a smile to our faces with his mannerisms and friendly jokes. This was a man who simply loved his life, and his desire to share his exuberance with so many others. He made a tremendous difference in our lives, and we can't begin to fathom how much we will miss him in our world. Fare thee well to a Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend, we love you more than words can tell.
Respecting the restrictions of Covid-19 including the wearing of facemasks and social distancing, and the requirement for pre-booking appointments, friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. visiting Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service in celebration of his life will be held on Monday at 9:30 am. at the funeral home. PLEASE NOTE: OCCUPANCY LIMITATIONS WILL APPLY. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Our deepest condolences to Norma and the entire Mazzone family :
Arthur and I are deeply saddened to learn of Phil´s passing. Both of us were fortunate to spend our teaching careers with Phil at
A.N. Myer Secondary School. He was a remarkable individual,
an exemplary teacher/department head, a collaborative professional colleague, and a congenial, sincere friend. Phil had his heart in a positive place, helping others with knowledge, vision, and above all with kindness and good humour. Beyond his professional life, we were always aware of his devotion, pride, care and concern for his family, with his wife,Norma, as his bright light.
Rest in peace, Phil. You will not be forgotten.

One of my teachers at NFCVI in the 60,s. I was lucky to have him as a teacher. I still remember one day when in his early class both my self and another person fell asleep in his class. As others tried to get us in trouble he said to leave us alone as we had both been working late the night before loading Coca Cola trucks at the plant. It was Xmas and we had to work late. When I eventually went into teaching I often thought of how he treated students. A great role model.

My deepest condolences to the Mazzone family. Mr. Mazzone was one of my favourite teacher at NFCVI back in the 60's. After working in a number of factories in the Niagara area I decide to return to school and sought out Mr. Mazzones advice. He suggested the University of Windsor and wrote a reference letter that was instrumental in me being accepted as an adult student. I will always be grateful for the friendship and advise that started me on my teaching career. He was such a wonderful and caring man and I was very fortunate to have known him.

I wanted to say how much Mr. Mazzone meant to me. He not only helped guide me and open a door that changed my life, but continued to give me guidance whenever I needed it. I remember him telling me later in my life, how proud he was of me. Even though I was in my 40's, it was like my father telling me as a young boy. He was a special human being and I will always be appreciative of his kindness and caring words. He had and will continue to have an impactful role in my life as I try to pay his efforts forward. You truly were one of a kind Mr. M. I will miss you. Dave.

Without a doubt, I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Phil Mazzone. Knowing how very connected he and you, Norma, along with your children and grandchildren, were to my life, most particularly at Our Lady of the Scapular Parish, this news is devastating to hear. Being "out of the loop" here in Niagara-on-the-Lake and away from closer contact with you in the Mazzone family, I was shocked to come across the death notice. Please be assured of my complete joining with you all in sorrow over such a great loss; I offer you my heartfelt sympathies and will include Phil in my own and this parish's prayers. Know that I am bonding with you spiritually and if there's anything I can do for you as a family, do contact me. This is a tremendous loss for you, but it impacts my life, too. This good man lived his faith in Jesus very well; may he be rewarded richly for his endeavours to make this world a better place. Love to you, sincerely, (Fr.) Peter

Words could never do justice to what Phil meant to me. He stepped in to ensure I worked hard at school, guiding me, assisting me and supporting me in securing a hockey scholarship. He went from a teacher, to mentor, to friend and then to second father to me. I will embrace the fond and funny memories he and I had on our team tours when he worked with us at the PHPA. The world lost a truly special human in Mr. Mazzone, one who cared more about those around him than he did himself. My deepest condolences to the entire Mazzone family who I sincerely thank for allowing him to such a big part of my life and career. Phil, you will be thought of often and missed dearly. Thank you so very much for all you did to make me the person I am today. Rest In Peace - I love you and you always be in my heart.

I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Mazzone's passing. I am grateful that I got to see him one last time just a few weeks ago at the Queen's Coach Restaurant, where he loved to come with Norma and their friends. Mr. Mazzone was my teacher for accounting and business classes at A N Myer school, and he was always so kind to me. A true gentle man..every time he came in the restaurant, he would tell whoever he was with that I was one of his favorite students, except that I had talked too much, which was probably true! I know he will be terribly missed by his loving family and friends..may your wonderful memories carry you through this difficult time.
