It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Sonya Canter of Port Colborne, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 18, 2022. Predeceased by Fred, her husband of 50 years, she leaves behind her loving children Brenda (Michael) Piraino, Brian (Sylvie) Canter, Nadine (Ron) Gibson, and Brett Canter (Tami Harper). Proud Baba of Steven (Sky-Lynn) Canter, Emily Canter (Chris Viccica), Adrian Piraino, Scott and Chad Canter and proud great-grand Baba to Harvey and Jackson Canter. Sonya was predeceased by her parents Mariona and Sam, her sisters Dora and Pearl, and brothers Johnny and Pete. She will be missed by many nieces and cousins. Sonya worked at the Bright Spot Restaurant and General Tire in Welland before she started her family. Mom was a kind, caring and generous soul who always put her family first. We will all miss her great sense of humour and her homemade cabbage rolls, pedaheh and borsch. She was a special mom and best friend to each of her children and her faithful dog Brandy, who was always by her side. Mom always had time to chat and lend a caring ear and gave us the best motherly advice. She will be dearly missed and we will carry her in our hearts and cherish our memories always. Special thanks to the ICU staff at the Greater Niagara General Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion during our mother's final days. We appreciate them taking the time to answer all of our questions about mom's care and well-being. Special thanks to Barb for taking care of Brandy at this difficult time. Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. If so desired memorial donations may be made in her name to the Welland and District Humane Society, Port Colborne Site, Niagara Children's Centre or The Hospital for Sick Children's Foundation in Toronto. Funeral arrangements entrusted to DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence St., Port Colborne. Online guest register and condolences are available at
