Walter Wismer Obituary

Walter passed away at 78 years of age on Wednesday, March 23, 2023 at Ina Grafton surrounded by his family. Walter was born on August 4, 1944 in St. Catharines, Ontario to the late Leonard and Ellen Wismer. Walter attended elementary school at Consolidated Elementary School and secondary school at Grantham High School and Lakeport High School. Walter married the late Betty Wismer on June 10, 1967, in St. Catharines and had 2 children, Suzanne and Rob. Walter worked at the Avondale Dairy for 15 years as a home delivery milkman followed by 27 and half years at the St. Catharines Transit as a city bus driver. Walter was blessed to have his long-time friend and partner Susan Rutledge by his side. Her love, devotion and compassionate care until the end will always be remembered. Walter loved to visit with friends, go out for breakfast and spend time with family. He was passionate about fishing and looked forward each year to spending time on Rice Lake with his brother fishing for pickerel. This was a tradition that their father started with them when they were children and was continued throughout their lives. Later in life, Walter learned to enjoy travelling and went on many adventures with his friend Marilyn. Walter was a Friend of Linhaven for 11 years. He enjoyed his time there, making many close and lasting friendships while supporting Nellie's fundraising efforts and contributing to the well-being of residents. Walter was also an avid cribbage player and was in the St. Catharines Cribbage League for many years. Walter was a loving and caring person and was always willing to lend a listening ear or hand to a friend. The courage, grace and dignity Walter showed throughout his illness will be remembered by everyone. Walter is survived by his children, Suzanne Wismer and Robert (Mary) Wismer, his brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Mary Wismer, his grandson Nathaniel, and his nieces Sandra Wismer, Catherine (Tyler) Hodson and his great nieces and nephews Zoe, Carter, Evan and Claire. A simple service celebrating Walter's life will be held at Butler Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel, 424 Niagara St., St. Catharines, family will receive friends on Monday, March 27, 2023 at 1 p.m. with the service to follow at 2 p.m. The family asks in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made in Walter Wismer's name to the Canadian Cancer Society-St. Catharines, or a Charity of Your Choice.
