William JONES Obituary

1955 - 2023
On January 6, 2023, Mike passed away after tenaciously challenging glioblastoma for 16 months. Beloved husband of Anne Andres-Jones for almost 44 years, or to quote Mike, "all my life." Proud father of Ryan and Amy Jones, Andrea Jones and Brad Beattie, Evan Jones and Kristy Engeland, and Eryn and Sarah Jones. Loving Papa to Mia, Macy, Mikey, Aria, and Hazel. Mike will be sadly missed by his parent-in-laws, Ed and Lois Andres, his siblings MaryAnn Enns, Dave and Karen Jones, Tim and Julie Jones; his brother and sister-in-laws Susan and John Vriens, Cathy Andres and Rob MacLachlan; his nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was predeceased by his parents William (Buck) and Anne Jones, and his grandparents Arnold and Nita Smith, and William and Florence Jones. Mike was a loyal, generous, and strong-willed family member and friend. He enjoyed our trips, dinners out, cottage weekends as well as his Friday lunches and sports trips. The children and Anne will always be grateful for the kindness and support shown to us by family and friends, especially in the time since Mike's diagnosis. After gaining business experience in a number of roles, Mike became a partner in English and Jones, now Jones & O'Connell LLP Chartered Professional Accountants. His prodigious work ethic as well as his commitment to excellence and his clients was rewarded by his clients' loyalty and in many cases friendship. He was proud that the company created jobs in Niagara. Mike enjoyed all sport as a young player, a coach, and a fan - he believed it to play an important role for children and youth. He was happy watching a professional game or sitting in a local arena watching lacrosse or kids' hockey. He had an amazing memory capacity for sport trivia and could talk or argue about almost any sport, but his real passion was for box lacrosse. He was proud to be awarded "The Spirit of Lacrosse" print for 40 years of service to the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Our heartfelt thanks to the medical teams at the Odette Cancer Centre of Sunnybrook Hospital for the excellent medical treatment, to the physiotherapy team at WIN health, and to the staff and volunteers at Niagara Hospice for their loving care and compassion. At Mike's insistence cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral or visitation. A gathering for family and friends to share their memories and stories will be held at a later date. If you wish to honour Mike's life, please contribute in some way to children's or youth sport in your local community. If you prefer, donations can be made in Mike's memory to the Sunnybrook Foundation (designated for Glioblastoma Research), or to Hospice Niagara.

I've had the honour of working with Mike in various ways for about 40 years. We developed a special bond of mutual respect, admiration and most of all friendship. He was brilliant and taught me so much. We worked so well together, solving problems and exchanging ideas, always with a great deal of humour involved. I'll always miss him. Mike's great love for his wonderful wife and family always shone through. Our hearts go out to you all.

Monty and I have different, but equally fine, memories of time spent with Mike. Monty coached Mike in lacrosse and he was a tenacious and dedicated player and promoter of the game. I knew Mike from his birth as I was a close neighbour who spent a lot of my childhood in and out of their home where I was always welcomed. The Andres kids, the Jones kids and myself were quite the neighbourhood rat pack. Our sincere condolences to Anne, Mary Ann, Dave, Tim and all their families. Monty and Helen Slingerland

I worked with Mike every day for 10 years, he was my mentor and friend. Hardly a day goes by where I don't catch myself saying or using something he taught me. He will be greatly missed.

Fun fact about Mike - In the year 2000 he averaged about 2 pots of coffee a day. This was after he had knee surgery and his office was about 40 yards from the coffee room... he could sure move fast on crutches.

My sincere condolences to Anne, Ryan, Andrea, Evan, and Eryn.

I accompanied Mike on long road trips performing CTC audits over 40 years ago, and then decades later, we somehow reconnected for trips to the Iroquois Arena to watch lacrosse games. Wherever we were, it was always my great pleasure to be alongside this kind and quick-witted traveller. My deepest sympathies.

Deepest sympathies to Mike´s wife Anne and family for your loss. I only knew Mike when he was a very young boy - yet continue to have very impressionable and very fond childhood memories to this day - as he and his brothers Dave and Tim, and sister MaryAnn were very close friends and neighbours with me and the rest of the Andres family (my three brothers Fred, Reg and Rick, and my sister "Sam" Sandra), and often reminisce about "the Jones´ kids" at our family gatherings.

Lindsay and I send our condolences to Anne and Jones family. Mike was a very caring person, with an ability to cut through all the noise and solve any problem you threw his way. I learned so much from working from him and attribute much of my future successes at work to him. We will miss him very much and know that he left the world a better place.
