SELLAR, General Gordon H. C.D. Bsc (Military) M.F.H. Born in Calgary in 1923 to a prominent Scottish lawyer father and an English teaching mother he was the foundation student at Strathcona School for boys (Now Strathcona Tweedsmuir). A lifetime athlete he was Junior Alberta badminton champion, a Western Canadian Jr. tennis star and the leading Jr. Boy Rider. Entering R.M.C. he tried out and made both the Football and Hockey teams. Graduating at 18 as a Lieutenant he went home to Alberta to join his wartime regiment, The Calgary Highlanders and to become engaged to Gloria, his boyhood love, whom he married just weeks before going overseas. Arriving at Dunkirk he was the 'Calgarys' Scout Officer and fought with them across France, Belgium, Holland, and into Germany to wars end. Accepted as a permanent force officer he enjoyed a brilliant career in Canada and many countries abroad. He served in Korea, commanded the First Battalion Black Watch in Gagetown, was Base Commander of the five Canadian Bases in Northern Germany later moving all of them with their families to Lahr S. Germany and the Fighter Station at Baden. Threading through Gordon's life there were always horses - a talented rider he played polo for Canada against the U.S. for England against Ireland and for West Africa in Nigeria. With his family they were a familiar sight in Horse Shows in Canada and the U.S. An organizer and rider for the Canada Trail, a founder of the National Hunter Trials and Canadian representative for the M.F.H. association. He was the Senior Master of the Frontenac Hunt for 25 years. Gordon was a sweet man. He cared fiercely for his soldiers and their welfare, loved his family dearly and was proud to serve his country. He leaves his wife Gloria and three children with their families. Susan Rahn, her husband Jim and daughter Emily. Rodney Sellar, his wife Dawn and daughter Madison. Robin Sellar with her two sons Adrian and Sean. A Memorial Service for Gordon will be held at Currie Hall, The Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, Saturday, October 16 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow.
