SOOKLAL, Dr. Lessey R. of St. John's, Newfoundland, born April 23, 1941 in Bonne Aventure, Trinidad passed away peacefully from cancer, 29th April 2006. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Leila (Ramnarase), sons Rohan and Anil, daughter Shara, and siblings Ruth (Terry Ragbir), Cintra (Bharat Persad), Ram (Cynthia) and Sandra (Franklyn Sambucharran). He will be sadly missed by other close relatives and friends.
Starting his academic career as a Lecturer at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, he went on to become Professor, Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland; Conference Chair of the 1987 Atlantic Schools of Business Conference; President and Chairman (1997) of the Board of Governors of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC). At the international level he served on the board of directors of the International Federation of Schools of Management (IFSAM) in 1997 where he was a member of its research committee, and represented Canada at several international venues. He leaves behind an extended network of dear friends, colleagues and students.
He developed and taught for over two decades Memorial's MBA courses in Research Methods and Human Resources Management. He served on the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Business Administration, several faculty and university committees, and by request for the University Senate. His pro bono services extended to appointments on the Boards of the Grenfell Regional Health Services, the Island Furniture Association, and the Waterford Hospital, where he was chair of its Labour Relations Committee.
His accomplishments notwithstanding, he always regarded his wife, three children and students as most precious in his life.
After cremation, visitation will be held on May 1 and 2, 2006, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St.John's. An Interfaith Memorial Service will be held at St. Augustine's Anglican Church, Westerland Road, St. John's on May 3, 2006 at 2 pm. His ashes will subsequently be scattered in accordance with Hindu rites in Trinidad, W.I.
