A. GUTHRIE Obituary

The Honorable A. Derek Guthrie (December 16, 1935 - July 12, 2025) Derek was a passionate outdoor man, conscientious lawyer, high-minded judge and a loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend. He particularly loved hunting at his club Schwandahgooze and wilderness canoe trips, loves matched only by his love of making maple syrup, his chainsaw and playing enthusiastic games of cribbage (which he rarely won) with the grandkids at his farm in the Eastern Townships. When travelling abroad to lands either rich in lush vegetation or awe-inspiring landscapes, or both, he always lugged his big camera bag with him and his camera was always clicking. He read extensively and enjoyed a large collection of classical and country music. Exercising personal responsibility within his community was important to him. He often played a leadership role and regularly contributed in diverse ways to the many outstanding institutions with which he was associated. Derek was a much respected gentleman with a great sense of humour and was loved by many. He is survived by his wife, Dr. JoAnn Meade; stepchildren, Kelly Ann and Christine Meade; and grandchildren, Ryan, Jack, Katie and Cailey, all of whom adored him. He is also survived by his sister, Anna; and his children, Christopher (Lis Wigmore) and Julie (Charles Joseph); and grandchildren, Caleb, William and Nicolas. Derek loved his family. As per his wishes, no formal funeral services are contemplated. Remember him fondly in your heart, perform some acts of kindness or plant a tree somewhere to share in his love of nature. Special thanks are due to the warm and faithful caregivers at the Father Dowd Residence where he spent the last years of his life. If desired, donations to their auxiliary would be appreciated.
