ADELINE MCINTOSH Obituary

The bravest person we know, Adeline McIntosh, has died. She was born on November 7, 1930, the cherished second daughter of Mary and William Polley late of Winnipeg, Manitoba. At age 21, she completed training in nursing at the Winnipeg General Hospital, where she participated in the evacuation of patients during the flood of 1950. In 1952, she moved to Ontario with her husband, Charles "Charlie" McIntosh, where she continued to work until the birth of her third child. She was an active partner in the business when Charlie decided to start his own company. Charlie fell ill in 1981 and while caring for her husband, Andy went back to school to requalify as a nurse and also regained a driver's licence. She worked for ten years at Scarborough Centenary Hospital while managing the household on her own, which earned her the nickname "Handy Andy." While Charlie was alive, she travelled to Spain and North Africa, in preparation for which she took a photography course and learned Spanish. She travelled to China before it was common to do so. After her retirement from nursing, she was able to resume travelling with family members to many other destinations. She was a great travelling companion - curious, intelligent, kind and funny. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles "Charlie"; and her sisters, Doreen Poole and Evelyn Copeland. She is mourned by her son, Charles "Chuck" McIntosh and daughter-in-law, Piros Molnar; and by her daughter, Leslie McIntosh and favourite son-in-law, Alick Ryder and their families. Remembered by her son, Cam of Calgary. She is sadly missed and forever loved by her sisters, Victoria Richards of Toronto, and Rosemarie Cuddy of Vancouver, BC, and their families. She will be missed by William Matthews of Lillooet, BC; and by the Kozub cousins of Winnipeg and her many other cousins; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and by the many friends she made during her long and active life. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Four Elms Retirement Residence for their considerate care. Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation at the Ogden Funeral Home at 4164 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the Knox United Church at 2569 Midland Avenue, Scarborough, on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1 p.m. She was an active member of Knox United Church while she was able. If desired, a contribution may be made to the Church or to a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be shared at: www.ogdenfuneralhome.com

I loved my cousin Andy. She was ten years older than me & I remember when she graduated from nursing & going with my mother & sister Koren to the ceremony. There was Andy in her uniform & cap holding her beautiful bouquet of red roses. Andy was so sweet. I remember going to her condo with my husband, George, for afternoon tea. Andy had it all laid out like an English tea room with beautiful china & tiny sandwiches & dainties. The last time I saw her was on George's & my 54th wedding anniversary. We were visiting our Polley cousins in Toronto & DeeDee, Andy, Vicki & George & I went out to our favourite Toronto restaurant. We had a wonderful time & it's a wonderful memory. My thoughts are with Leslie, Chuck, Vicki, Rosie, William & all their families
