Adrian Laurence MILES

Adrian Laurence MILES obituary

Adrian MILES Obituary

Adrian had been in the hospital in Toronto, for a few weeks. His heart just couldn't sustain his larger than life persona, any longer. He was a visionary, who spent his life learning and conversing with people, all over the world. Through the last 11 months Adrian enjoyed his visits with his beautiful first grandchild, Poppy. His care for his children, Winston Adrian ( Madison) , and Montana Jayne ( Scott ) was limitless. His loving partner, Nora Turkevics has been a Godsend to him, through the years. He will be missed of course, by Hunter; his ex-wife, Jayne (Gregory); his dear friend, Jeff; his buddy from forever, Ian (Mary). Adrian's siblings were Fiona Miles and Tim Miles. The son of a Royal Dutch Shell Petroleum Company GM Adrian was born in oil country, Kuala Lumpur, Borneo. Spending the formative years of life playing near the jungle, and kicking a soccer ball around with the ex-pats kids, Adrian acquired his taste for heat, Sports, dinners served on fine china, and people dressed in their finery. He was bright, and musical, and loved the cultural life of his parent's set. Once in England, his family settled in Birkenhead, Merseyside, Cheshire. Active in tennis, soccer and music at school, and so darned good at Math, he found his teachers always steered him to economics and finance. Although the Beatles were playing in the area, and life as a teen was quite colourful, Adrian longed to be where the real action was, in London. As soon as he could leave after high school, he called a contact that his dentist had, and went to London for lunch. Adrian couldn't pack fast enough… and never looked back. Quickly making a name in the market, Adrian loved the nightlife in London in the '70s. Soho comedy clubs, frequently entertaining clients in the finest way he knew; with great food, wines and laughter. He flitted back and forth to Dubai through those years, building a strong connection to the Saudi's. By 1979, his success at Tullett and Riley presented an offer to try the Big Apple, as a challenge. There, Adrian embraced the multi-cultural aspect of the community, and grew his contacts into further realms. His love of horses grew, and he and Minder and Ian, explored interests away from Manhattan. Tullett offered him a job in their Toronto office, they wanted to grow in Canada. Upon moving, Adrian knew this was his real home. His arrival to the restaurant scene set a new standard of entertaining clients. He made a big splash as he embraced his work here. Within years, he was the toast of new restaurants… they would send a bottle of Champagne with an invitation before opening, in hopes that he would come visit them in their first week of business. In the mid 1980's he moved to Fulton Prebon money brokers. He quickly built up the Foreign exchange desk, and built a Spot desk that made some legendary trades. People loved Adrian. For 4 years he was the president of the Canadian Foreign Exchange Committee, a senior level committee that shares information between the market and the Bank of Canada. He took this role very seriously, and considered it a great honour to be voted in to lead it by his peers. Adrian left the market in 1992, to build a home for his Family,in Lyford Cay Club in the Bahamas. For years he golfed, coached soccer, and played a lot of tennis. This balanced, with his extensive travel and work, spending time in Russia and Europe ( to further pursue his wine knowledge ). No one entertained like Adrian. For the past 10 years Adrian has been struggling at times with health issues. His inability to travel and remain active frustrated him. No one could engage a crowd the way that he could. If he didn't enter a place with friends, he quickly endeared himself to many, and was surrounded quickly by people who loved to be close. He was collaborator. He once called an employee into his office, and presented him with his expenses for the month. The young man looked up sheepishly. Adrian said 'Why aren't you spending MORE on your clients? ' That was him. White Silk Scarf fluttering behind him in the breeze as he walked to his Porsche. Our Biggles. Our James Bigglesworth, the fictional Pilot and adventurer. Adrian Miles. We love you, and miss you already. We look forward to hearing your stories when we come together at a later time to celebrate him. My condolences to the Miles family. Adrian was one of a kind, brilliant, funny, compassionate. He was larger than life, he could hold court anywhere, everyone wanted to hear what he had to say, they hung on to his every word.
I will always remember his number 4 Davidoff cigars first thing in the morning with coffee and his champagne in the evening.
I will celebrate your passing with number 4 and a glass of Port.
I'm sure you are holding court in heaven and all are listening. RIP my friend.

One of the most gregarious figures in FX history. Always with a drink, a cigar, and a smile. Will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family and friends

I still tell stories about him and no one believes me. He was the definition of flamboyant. "A bottle of Dom in each hand. I've never seen it fail.". I was lucky to work for him.

We were saddened to hear of Adrian's passing. Our sympathies to his Family and many colleagues and friends around the FX world. I recall Adrian's arrival on the Toronto scene. What an absolute incredible character and fiercest competitor he presented. Reckon on many days he was the impetus for the Canadian spot market. It was the wild west of our times and he was the consummate impresario. Wether celebrating another record day or simply being Tuesday , Adrian's calling cry could be heard throughout bars were ever he turned up, " Champagne For Everyone". Adrian , Rest In Peace, Heaven just got a whole bit livelier!
