I spent a few months in Stratford General Hospital as an internal medicine fellow around 2005-6. Dr vanWalraven [he insisted I called him Art] was my supervisor. I learned so much from him. His knowledge, clinical skills and sense of humor were legendary. I picked up a few 'Art-isms' along the way, many of which have found its way in my chart notes :) He showed me how to practice medicine and what it is like to treat patients with skills, compassion and humanity. I am forever grateful to have met Art. My deepest condolences to his family. He will be fondly remembered.

I just learned of Art's death. I am very sorry for his family. As a physician practicing in Listowel, I would send Art my most challenging patients as he loved a challenge and never failed me. Also, he had a great sense of humor.

It's taken me a while to figure out what to say. It's not that Art has not been on my mind, but it's hard to put those thoughts and emotions into words. I am very proud and grateful for the path he carved out in his family and in medicine. His door always open, his jokes always rolling, and his honour always strong. My sympathies and thoughts are with Deb, Kira and Leisse who remain. xoxo
