A.J. "JEFF" MACDONALD

DR. A.J. 'JEFF' MACDONALD (1923-2005) Beloved husband of Elspeth, dear father of Susan Laverty (Edmond Robertson) of Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Alec Macdonald and Ian Macdonald (Naomi) both of Vancouver and Jennifer Macdonald (Ken Dubblestyne) of St. Marys, Ontario. Grandpa of Rozlyn and Adelle Dubblestyne and Renn and Kei Macdonald. Survived by his sisters Gladys Macdonald of Devon, England and Alison Bell of Gloucestershire, England. Born in Liverpool, England on December 30, 1923, he was educated at Merchant Taylor's, Crosby England, achieving honours in leadership and integrity, as well as in all sports. In 1942, he volunteered in the Highland Light Infantry and was Commissioned in the Manchester Regiment in 1943. He served in northwest Europe as Captain. He graduated MB-CHB Bristol University 1953, where he was also Captain of University Golf. He emigrated to Canada in 1955. Resident in Pediatrics/Medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital, London then resident in Pediatrics at War Memorial Children's Hospital, London before establishing a general practice in Stratford in January 1957. He was appointed coroner in 1972 and served until 1993 and held numerous hospital appointments including Chief of Staff and President of Medical Staff. He retired in 1994, but continued to practice medicine until his 80th year. His community involvement included Stratford Board of Education Chairman 1962-1964, President Stratford Art Association 1970-1972, Board of Ontario S.P .C.A. Perth County Branch. In 1997 he was the recipient of the Ontario Medical Association Glen Sawyer Award for service to the profession and community. He was a member of Stratford Country Club since 1964 also Founding member of Stratford Squash Group 1978. Jeff loved theatre both as audience and performer and was featured in local charity productions Cor Blimey and Splurge, Slodge and Crudge as well as CTV Networks 'Doctors Diary' 1968-1969. At Jeff's request, his body has been donated to U.W.O. to further medical education and research. Friends and relatives will be welcome at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Saturday October 15th from 2 p.m. until 4pm. followed by a Celebration of his life. Remembrances would be deeply appreciated to the Stratford General Hospital Foundation or to the O.S.P .C.A Perth County Branch through the funeral home.
