ALAN ADELKIND obituary

ALAN ADELKIND Obituary

Fast sailor, slow golfer, and a quick wit. The epitome of positivity. November 20, 1945 – August 4, 2025 A consummate sailor, beloved friend, mentor, husband, and gentle soul, Alan passed away peacefully, in Toronto (working until the end), leaving behind a legacy defined by passion, generosity, and an unwavering love for life on the water. Wise, kind, humble, and funny, Alan carried himself with a quiet charisma that lit up every room - whether at sea or on shore. He had the ability to make even the smallest task meaningful. A proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Alan was a force in Canadian sailing. He was a Laser North American Champion, competed in the 470 World Championships, and in the 1980s, served as the Canadian Olympic 470 coach, inspiring a generation of competitive sailors. His greatest gift was his ability to elevate those around him - not just on the racecourse, but in every aspect of life. Though he began law and business school, Alan left both to follow his true calling: sailing. In the early 1980s, he founded Angus Yachts, which would go on to become one of Canada's largest yacht brokerages. He was a steady hand and a trusted advisor who cherished loyal friendship. Predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Sam Adelkind; and his cousin, Rheta-Helen Hermolin. Alan is survived by his wife and indomitable soulmate, Alice, from Dallas; his sister, Sheryl Adelkind; his cousins, Sheila Fischman (Don Winkler), Marilyn Fischman (Bob Lewis); and by Alice's family, Richard and Betsy Eiseman, Reed, Tyler, and Elly Batesko, and Richard and Ally Eiseman; as well as many dear friends. Alan was extremely appreciative of the exceptional care he received at Princess Margaret Hospital. Donations in his name could be made to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. A celebration of Alan's life will take place in the fall. Alan Adelkind brought out the best in all of us. And in return, he leaves behind a sea of memories, stories, and love. Fair winds, Alan.

Earlier today

Alan was indeed a gentle soul and a devoted and adoring husband to Alice. His quiet demeanor hid his vast knowledge not just of boats and sailing but of golfing and other sports as well. He was above all kind. May his memory be a blessing. Alice we are all here for you.

Alice, from Dallas, my sincere condolences to you.
I first met Allan sailing (against him) at the RCYC. He was the consummate leader ... not in an aggressive manner but with a quiet, capable strength. He was quick to share his knowledge and better his competitors and the sport. Years later, I met him and Alice as part of my neighbourhood working on a community project ... same Allan. I admired him. I wish you strength Alice.
