Rod passed away peacefully in Victoria on February 26, 2024, surrounded by love and music. Born in Vancouver in 1937, Rod earned degrees from the University of British Columbia and MIT, on his way to a career in economics and public policy that included time in Ottawa with the Government of Canada; in Paris with the OECD; and in Victoria as the founding Chair of the University of Victoria's School of Public Administration, and with its Centre for Global Studies. Following his nominal retirement, Rod remained active for the rest of his life as a valued mentor, colleague, and champion of intellectual inquiry and exploration. Through the years he inspired generations of students to infuse policy development with principles of sustainability, justice, reconciliation, and both ecological and community well-being. Rod was widely admired for his expansive and creative mind, and his ability to forge connections among ideas and people across disciplines. He was deeply loved for his gentle humour, his boundless generosity in all things, and his unwavering kindness. He will be especially missed by wife Marnie; children, Lauren, Darcy, and Ken (Sandra); his grandchildren, Hannah (Braden), Marin, Sol, and Maud; his siblings, Ken and Carol, and their families. A condolence board has been set up by colleagues at the Centre for Global Studies:
