Alan GORDON Obituary

ALAN GORDON BA, MA, PhD Alan's family sadly announce his passing on July 25, 2022, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital after a courageous struggle with cancer. He is survived by his partner of 30 years, Adrienne Warren; his parents, Ian and Margaret Gordon of Waterloo; his sister, Pamela Schaefer (Brad) of Kitchener; and his two nieces, Jaclyn and Courtney. He will also be sadly missed by his many relatives in New Jersey, Australia, and Scotland. He was in his 55th year. He loved academic life and graduated from The University of Toronto with a Batchelor of Arts Degree (Politics and History), and a Masters of Arts followed by a Doctorate in History from Queen's University, Kingston. He taught at several Ontario universities before settling at the University of Guelph, rapidly advancing to become a full professor. In addition to being a highly regarded, bilingual Professor of History, he was also a respected author with three books to his credit. He was a co-founder of the Canadian Historical Review, and a valued contributor to same, which he supported with many historically related articles and was also featured at well attended, public panel discussions. He became a leading authority on Canadian and Quebec History and wrote and presented many unique and historically interesting papers for academic consideration at seminars hosted by universities in Canada, France, and The United States. As an all-round fan of sports he enjoyed baseball, hockey, soccer and even Celtic Football and in his youth he played on the 'Gridiron' for the Waterloo Chargers, earning the coveted distinction of MVP and he even adopted the Green Bay Packers as his team of choice to support. Possessing an amazingly dry humor, he was much appreciated by his friends and his academic colleagues which increased his popularity among students and colleagues alike. Alan and Adrienne were avid travelers to many 'far-flung' destinations. They both enjoyed the varied cultures and cuisine encountered on their trips. Alan was born in Stirling, Scotland, in 1968 and resided with his parents and sister in the small town of Denny on the periphery of the City of Stirling before leaving for Canada at the age of four with his parents and sister in 1973. The family wish to thank the oncologists, nurses and other professionals at both the Cancer Unit and the Palliative Care Unit of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their excellent care and kindness. At the family's request, no flowers should be sent; in their place, contributions to Pancreatic Cancer Canada would be greatly appreciated.

Professor Gordon was my first introduction to the world of history in academia, and I could not have asked for a better inspiration to follow by. His strong interest and intellect for the subject was matched by his wit and empathy by which he presented the material. His tutelage and guidance are things I will forever be privileged to have had experienced. He remains deeply inspiring to me, and I hope to be able to do work in some capacity that he would be proud of. Perhaps even something deserving of that legendary A+. My thoughts are still with his friends and loved ones.

I will always remember Al from the many evenings we spent, as undergraduates, talking in the Wallace House common room. We had a lot of good times back then. The news of his passing is the worst I have heard in many years. Condolences to his family, and of course to Adrienne.

Al was an extremely loyal customer at Youngs Goodyear Store. A kind hearted man with a great smile came to us with his car for many years. He will be sorely missed at Youngs.

I´ll always remember Alan from the days at U of T for his hilarious sense of humour, fascinating conversation (especially on Canadian history), and fun camaraderie at ball hockey or the gym or just hanging out in the common room. He was good-natured and good-hearted-a great guy all around. My condolences to Adrienne and to his family.

Ian and Evelyn, Mom would be so saddened to learn of your son's passing at such a young age. She always enjoyed your updates on his life and accomplishments, and hearing of his travels. May his memory bring you peace in the coming days!
