ALAN KASSEL Obituary

Died peacefully on the morning of June 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. Devoted son of Max and Vi Kassel; cherished husband of Heather; loving father of Brian (Yoko), Jeff (Amanda) and Michelle (Michael); adoring grandfather of Lauren, Levi and Kyla; admired brother and brother-in-law of Ted Kassel, Bill (z"l) and Carol Kassel, Bob and Marian Kassel, Gail and Earl (z"l) Winemaker, Sandra and Phil (z"l) Yanover; beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews; and friend to many. Alan leaves a legacy of kindness and caring, and a zest for life, which he brought to any activity that he pursued, whether it was running triathlons, mountain biking or travelling. Alan may be best remembered as an incredibly devoted doctor. Known for his incomparable work ethic and compassion, Alan took his designation as family physician literally, caring for his patients as if they were truly family. Alan's outlook on life, even in illness, was one of immense gratitude. He will be greatly missed and forever loved. The family would like to thank the many family members and friends that supported and stood by Alan through his lengthy illness. We would especially like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, personal support workers and other staff at the Meighen Manor Long-Term Care Home, who provided exceptional loving care to Alan over the past six-and-a-half years. Please see www.benjamins.ca for service information. If desired, donations in Alan's memory may be made to Meighen Manor (salvationarmy.ca/meighenhealth, 1-800-725-2769), Alzheimer Society of Toronto (alz.to, 416-322-6560), or the Charity of Your Choice.

Apologies for the late contribution here -- frankly it has felt too sad to be able to write about it. When Dr. Kassel retired so abruptly in 2011, our family was devastated. From the early days at Finch-Leslie plaza to the many many visits to his office on Bayview, he had been a lifeline for us. Even though we often felt ill when going to his office, we never minded the long waits in his waiting room, because we knew he was giving others the same respectful care that we too would receive. And he always made us feel comfortable sharing private information with him. Watching him run from examining room to examining room with his trademark enthusiastic energy could bring a smile to anyone´s face. Our appointments with him were always thorough, warm and encouraging. Seeing him standing at our mother´s bedside in the hospital each morning at 7:00 am. as she was recovering from a stroke, was exactly the comfort that we needed.

His staff was properly close-mouthed about what had motivated the quick retirement. Now - 14 years later, after reading the obituary and watching the Benjamin´s service online, we can understand and are heartbroken. For a man so full of life, laughter and energy and love to be destroyed by such an unforgiving disease is so unfair - both to him and to all of the people who stood by and loved him for these agonizingly long years. Thank you for sharing him with us for so long - and we are so sad for the journey you have been on for these last many years.
