Alan TURNBULL Obituary

ALAN TURNBULL After a short and courageous battle with cancer Alan Turnbull passed away on April 24, 2022. Loving husband to Betty for 60 years; father of Ian (Alison) and Claire (Les), and incredibly proud "gpa" to Jack, Jeremy and Annie. He was also friend to too many pets to name except for his beloved Daisy (the donkey), Becky, Lucky and Ike. Alan was born September 3, 1939, in Kingston-upon-Hull, UK. In 1968, at the young age of 28, Alan and Betty immigrated with a 4-year-old child in tow to their newly adopted home of Canada, eventually settling in Scarborough. Despite retaining a few hard-to-shake links to the UK (such as his accent and taste for a good ale and fish and chips), Alan fully embraced his newly adopted country and would be aghast to be called anything other than a proud Canadian. As a testament to the strength of his commitment and loyalties, Alan would only ever work for one company in Canada. He landed a job with Carswell-Methuen shortly after his arrival where he began as a Legal Editor, and eventually earned his way to President. Alan took great pleasure in the simple things in life: sitting on a beach in the sun whether at an Ontario Provincial Park or anywhere on the Atlantic Ocean; tending to his vegetable patch, with priority being given, of course, to the tomatoes; or forever making adjustments to tents and tarps during family camping trips. He especially loved being the centre of attention at his birthday parties but only if he was at the wrong end of the joke and the gifts were funny and symbolic rather than useful or extravagant. He sought out lively discussions, particularly those involving history, current affairs or sports, which often lasted well into the wee hours or until everyone agreed with him. "Gpa" will be forever missed and never forgotten. A celebration of Alan's life will be held for friends and family at a later date. The family is eternally grateful to the caring staff at the Yee Hong Peter K. Kwok Hospice. In lieu of flowers, we would greatly appreciate donations made in Alan's name at www.yeehong.com .

Alan gave me my start in legal publishing. His support of the team and his understanding of the law and egalitarian publishing were at the heart of Carswell´s success. He will be fondly remembered by everyone who worked with him. Betty´s unwavering support of Alan was admirable. You have my condolences.

I read Alan´s obituary in the Globe & Mail today, and I´m sorry for your loss. I worked for Alan for many years in Calgary as one of his managers, and he was very good to the team here. He´d come out and visit the office, and he was always very kind, interested and an altogether lovely man. He had a fine sense of humour and a lively intelligence, and we always enjoyed his visits. I wish his family well, Pat Anderson
