ALBERT DE VOS Obituary

ALBERT de VOS Born on January 13, 1950 in Breda, Netherlands, to Louise Augustine van der Voort and Paul de Vos; died on August 21, 2022, in Temiskaming Hospital, New Liskeard. Albert studied art formally in Holland and at OCADU in Toronto. He learned to cook his signature Indonesian meals while doing his national military service at sea. As a person and as an artist, he was an original, with a creative affinity for the whimsical, magical, absurd - and weird. He made beautiful, arresting, and sometimes disturbing art with elements of the surreal, fairy tales, and his own Dutch heritage in the ever present fish and cheese in his paintings. Albert immigrated to Canada in 1974 and made his working career in arts-adjacent tool and die making and prosthetic design, teaching art to school children, and as an esteemed senior scenic artist at the CBC, where he met his future wife Sylvia Lange. Albert loved travel, photography and live music - he himself played a mean harmonica - from blues in Toronto to salsa in Cuba to gypsy jazz in the Breda parks. In his last decade, Albert was a much-loved Opa, giggling and joking and getting into trouble with his girls, Eva and Ali. And he was always the best of companions, as his friends and co-workers will attest. Albert walked gently and kindly on this earth. His wry laugh, dark humour and warmth will be much missed by Sylvia; his son, Adrian; and wife, Ashley; and daughters, Evangeline and Alexandra Lange; brother, Hans and children Frits and Wieteke; father-in-law Eugen Missel; sister- and brother-in-law, Heike and Udo Pilz and children Tom and Nina; and by his many friends who were like family. In memory of Albert, donations can be made to Community Cancer Care or Temiskaming Hospital.

Warme groet. I met Al when he worked at Bloorview children's hospital in Toronto. He once told us, after attending an exhibition of Van Gogh's art athe AGO, that in the lineup to get in, he was speaking to a woman about the artist, and that when he pronounced it" Van Goff " which is the correct pronunciation, she corrected him! He never told her that she was wrong.! I remember when he left Bloorview to work at the Thornhill Montessori School, we were happy for him, but sad to lose him. I am glad he had such an interesting life.
