Alexander BOWEN Obituary
BOWEN, Alexander Nicol
On Wednesday, February 8th, 2006 at Wellesley Central Place, Toronto, in his 86th year. Born in North Bay, Alex served as an officer's steward during the Second World War before commencing his artistic career at Simpson's in Toronto, where he worked in the display department between 1946-1951. At the CBC (1951-1969) Alex worked as a set decorator for television shows before moving on to Rabko and then to The Partners Film Company, two leading Toronto commercial production houses. As a film Art Director with impeccable good taste, he was in constant demand by many top directors in the business and the results of his most valuable contributions have been seen all over North America. A wonderful and original fine artist in his own right, Alex's last one- man show was held in September of 2003. Alex was also co-owner of the Bowen/Kamimura Gallery on Scollard Street during the 1980s. A great lover of music, and humanitarian, Alex possessed a true generosity of spirit, and an unending, often outlandish sense of humour, touching many people over the course of his long lifetime.
Alex leaves behind a few family members and a large circle of loving friends, colleagues and admirers. In lieu of a funeral or memorial service, Alex requested a gathering celebrating his life, which will be held at a later date.
