Alexandra HURST Obituary
ALEXANDRA (SANDY) JULIA HURST MARCH 31, 1941 APRIL 6, 2010 Sandy lived her life uncompromisingly, abiding by the principles of love, honesty, integrity and loyalty, qualities prized by her Scottish forbearers. Her passion instilled these values in her children and her students worldwide. She lived well, laughed often, loved much. Her name means 'defender' and she was a true warrior for those she loved and equally for a just cause. Lover of good books and faraway places, sunset on the lake and family above all else. Planter of gardens, devoted dog owner, and a gourmet cook prepared to pick shot out of a pheasant in pursuit of culinary perfection on an island in the Outer Hebrides. An educator who became a mentor and touchstone for her students long after graduation. In 1965 she married Lawrence Hurst, the steadfast love of her life and the adventure began. In 1984 she returned to her university studies at the University of Western Ontario to pursue graduate studies in English. Sandy always regarded this as the second most intelligent decision of her life. Sandy leaves husband Dr. Larry Hurst, sister Helen (Dennis Manarey), children Heather (Colin Johnston), Julia (James Skinner), Cameron (Kerry Emmonds) and her grandchildren Adam and Paige Johnston, and Harrison and Graydon Skinner. Visitors will be received at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 472 Richmond Street at Queens Avenue, on Friday, April 9, 2010 from 10 a.m. until the commencement of the Funeral ser vice at 11 a.m. Flowers are welcome; equally welcome are donations to the London Humane Society.
