ALISTAIR MERFYN AND ELEANOR MARIE DAVID Obituary

Alistair Merfyn David (April 26, 1923 in Beddau, Wales - February 15, 2025 in Toronto) and Eleanor Marie David (nee Thomson) (July 8, 1927 in Florida, US - January 26, 2025, in Toronto).

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our loving and remarkable parents, fittingly just 20 days apart. Eleanor and Merf met singing in the Toronto Gilbert & Sullivan Society in the '50s, a decade after Merf returned from serving in the War in Europe, and enjoyed a long, happy life together in Montreal, Toronto, and at their cottage on Stony Lake. Their shared passions included family, travel - particularly to the UK, British Columbia, and latterly, to Kingsburg, NS - classical music and opera, gardening, reading, their involvement at Humbercrest United Church and decades of Masterpiece Theatre! Eleanor and Merf were predeceased by their parents; their infant daughter, Susan; and their siblings (Eleanor's brother, Ted; and Merf's brothers and sisters, Hilary, David, Glenys and Gwyn). Daughters, Alison (Bill Gore) and Jennifer (Hans Engell); son, Owen (Sarah Hill David); and cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Nils, Bronwyn, Sam and Michaela are left to mourn, celebrate and carry on Eleanor and Merf's joint legacy of love, laughter, dignity, adventure, bravery, unbounded curiosity, and dedication to community. Eleanor and Merf will be missed by a large number of nieces and nephews and by friends far and wide.

Thank you to Daissy Cardona, Nora Palacio Madrid and Faith Ofuasia for their care in recent years, and to Elena Yeryomenko and her team for making Merf and Eleanor's years at The Grenadier enjoyable. Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of their lives will be held in the spring. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Joseph's Health Centre or the Kawartha Land Trust.

We were so incredibly fortunate to live beside Merf & Eleanor for many years. Our first Christmas eve in the neighbourhood there was a knock on the side door. It was Eleanor amongst the snowflakes with a delicious plate of homemade goodies and her cheery smile. Merfyn & Eleanor were a remarkable couple. They will be in our hearts & memories forever.
We send warm love and condolences to the family along with gentle hugs to Jennifer, Alison & Owen, their children and the extended family.
