I knew Allan for over 30 years on a professional basis. He was always interesting to listen to but he was equally interested in listening. A strong attribute in a good and great Canadian.
May he Rest in Peace.

To Allan's family, may I say how sad I am to know of his passing. My thoughts today are about him and you through him. From the start of his law practice after his distinguished pubic service, he became a generous friend, a mentor of sorts, and the most engaging interlocutor about all manner of things. His commitment to ideals, insight, gracious candor, wisdom and wit were always inspiring, enlightening and downright enjoyable, and in full view during precious and much anticipated but too infrequent lunches together. No doubt, for many these kinds of memories will be Allan's continuing and, though in a different way, no less engaging "life" with us. With sincere sympathy. Scott Wilkie

My dad, Ed Weinstein, was a first cousin of Alan's. I met him once at my grandparents 50th anniversary party in Chicago. My dad spoke of Alan often and their meeting up in DC with him and my Aunt Ruth, my dad's sister. The history of our family is very extensive and I have a letter that Alan sent to our cousin Toby telling about how the family came to Canada and the US. In 1972 my family traveled to Israel and my dad arranged for us to meet Judy, who was wonderful and took us all over Jerusalem, she was so nice and made our visit so personal.
My heartfelt condolences to you.

After almost 40 years with the Depatment of External Affairs/Department of Foreign Affairs/Global Affairs, Allan Gotlieb was the best Under Secretary that I had the pleasure of serving. Canada has lost a great man.

I am so devastated by him passing away.We had been friends since he went to Oxford where he obtained the best law degree for 50 years. He used to stay with us in London when he was not in Oxford.
He was one of the most remarkable men I have ever met kind caring and loving to those he knew
