ALLAN FREDERICK LEACH obituary

ALLAN LEACH Obituary

Peacefully, on October 18, 2024, at the age of 88, Allan passed away after a struggle with dementia. He leaves his loving and devoted wife, Barbara Finegan; his beloved daughters, Susan Murray (David) and Deborah Atkinson (the late David Atkinson); grandchildren, Allison Murray, Kathryn Thompson (Dan), Elizabeth Atkinson and Michael Atkinson; and great-grandchildren, Natalie and Lewis Thompson. Allan was born on December 9, 1935, in Toronto and grew up in the village of Mount Dennis. He had an extensive career in public service, including 23 years for the Ontario Department of Highways, Managing Director of Go Transit, and Chief General Manger of the Toronto Transit Commission. In 1995, he was elected MPP for St. George-St. David, and was appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in the Mike Harris cabinet and led the amalgamation of the city of Toronto. He retired to his home in Atlantis, Florida, until 2021 when he moved permanently to Rye, NY. He loved golfing with his many friends at Toronto's Board of Trade and Florida's Atlantis Golf Club. He will be missed and remembered fondly by many, and we will forever fill our glasses to the brim with "a big Al pour." A celebration of Allan's life will be held at a later date.

Dear Susan, Debbie, and family,
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. It´s been many years since we have been in touch but will always remember Mr.Leach and our parents getting together for parties at each others homes and the annual corn roast your parents would host. While I lived across the street and Randy up the street as kids we remember so many times our parents all socialized and the great times they had as friends. Mr.Leach achieved great things in his life and I´m sure you are both very proud of him but we just remember him as a lovely man. May he be at peace.

I am writing to add my condolences and express my high respect for the man I always and still refer to as "Minister." It was my pleasure to serve as his Chief of Staff while he was Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. It is said that no man is a hero to his valet. Well...as a sort of political valet, I beg to differ. He was and remains a hero of mine for his decency and his service. His leadership and courage were extraordinary. I treasure the time I worked with him. Please accept my condolences. Respectfully.. Matheson, former Chief of Staff to the Hon. Allan F. Leach

I had the pleasure and honor to travel to Cuba with Al, at which time we were helping GO Transit dispose of the fleet of 123 Single level coaches that were manufactured at the Hawker Siddeley Plant in Thunder Bay. My interactions with Al were very rewarding and I will always remember him with respect. His demeanor was always positive, and he was a man of class and integrity. May he rest in peace and may his family always keep his memory alive. Bon voyage dear friend and rest easy.

Al will be sadly missed by so many dear friends. We both joined the TTC at the same time both having come from the Ontario public service. I was Al´s confidant and direct report.... he was an absolute delight to work with.
My deepest sympathy to all the family. I will always cherish the memories.

Sincere condolences to family on Al's passing. I served in cabinet with Al and much admired his tenacity in handling a very challenging portfolio and his down-earth way of dealing with issues. I admired and liked him very much.

Sincere condolences to the entire family. My husband Chuck and I worked for Al when he was Managing Director of GO Transit. He was a good leader in a growing organization, and very steadfast in his vision for GO. He expected the very best from his employees, but was supportive and fair. In answering many letters on his behalf, I also got to see a softer side, with a witty sense of humour and kindness. Rest In Peace "Chief" - you will be missed. Cathy and Chuck Stradling.

Al was a real professional who astutely steered the TTC. I learned a lot from him during our time together. I wish to extend my condolences to his family on their loss. RIP Al.

Al was one of my mentors.
He and I went to GO Transit about the same year however he was the new Chief as Ann Elliott said and I was at the bottom of the chart.
Over the years he supported me in my climb in the organization as he did again when he joined the provincial government.
We employees at GO Transit were lucky to have a boss of his calibre!
God bless you Al!

One time when I was a TTC Subway operator I had been letting a little girl press the horn on the train a few times then when serviced St Clair St I see Mr Leach walking down the platform and I'm thinking oh dear I'm in trouble now but he just gave me a smile and a wave as he walked by.
He gave great service to the community.
My Condolences to his family and friends, may he RIP.
