Allan MANSON Obituary

September 8, 1948 – August 19, 2024 Allan had a peaceful, medically assisted death, at his home in Kingston, ON, surrounded by loved ones, fresh flowers, and the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel, after living more than five years with lung cancer. He was a brilliant, internationally renowned, and highly-respected legal scholar, an expert in Canadian evidence law and sentencing, and author of numerous academic articles, book chapters, and books. Allan was a dynamic, well-loved, and award-winning teacher, who profoundly influenced countless students over his 39-year career at the Queen's Faculty of Law, from 1977 to 2016. A passionate advocate for justice and equity in the legal system and society at large, Allan despised abuses of power in any form. He championed prisoner rights. He also led the fight for the unionization of the Queen's University faculty in 1995, and served as president and chief negotiator for the Queen's University Faculty Association. Before joining the Faculty at Queen's, Allan was a practising criminal lawyer in Toronto. He served as the Project Director for the Ontario Law Reform Commission study of the coroners' system from 1990-1994, and was a Deputy Judge of the Yukon Territorial Court from 1994-1995. He also represented clients at the Cornwall Public Inquiry (2005-2009) into allegations of abuse of young people. Allan was predeceased by his parents, Manny and Shirley; and is survived by cherished daughter, Jessamyn, and her husband, Robert Cox; beloved partner, Demetra Sorvatzioti; brothers, Richard (Gilah) and Robert (Sarah); and many friends and colleagues. We will miss him. Cremation has taken place. If you wish to make a donation in Allan's memory, please give to the causes that were important to him: St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston, the John Howard or Elizabeth Fry Society, Médecins Sans Frontières, your local Humane Society, or a social justice cause of your choice.

Oh no... this is sad. Allan lived across the street in the 1980s and he'd come over for coffee some days. Very very nice guy ... I admired his left leaning social conscience. He died too young.

I met Allan Manson in June 2006 when he lectured for a week to Judges of the Ontario Court of Justice at Windermere Manor Hotel in London, Ontario. My wife and I spent much time with him during that week as we found him to be a wonderful human being. After the sessions were over, I sent him some material on matters of mutual interest. He replied to me by letter dated November 2, 2006, apologized for the delay in replying and thanked me for the material. He dealt with other issues and I was looking for the letter and decided to google his name and was shocked to learn of his death since August 28. Although my contact with him was limited, I found him to be a brilliant teacher and a wonderful human being. My wife and I send sincere condolences to his family on his passing. Requiescat In Pace.

Prof. Allan was a ray of light. I was truly privileged to have had him as mentor during my LLM studies. Such a great man and inspiring professor! His support, care and positive energy, along with his sense of humor, made a huge impact in my work. I will be forever thankful to have known him and received his instruction.
My sincere condolences to the family and friends.

I am so saddened by the news of Professor Manson's passing. He had an electric curiosity, sharp intellect and also a kind and courageous nature.

I'm very sorry I didn't tell him how much he meant to me as a student - showing no particular promise in the area of criminal law - but I always felt seen and heard by him. His feedback meant the world to me. I will remember his many kindnesses. He was a one of a kind - an extraordinary human. Blessings and peace to him and his family.

Professor Manson shaped my future legal career when he sauntered into our first year criminal law class and told us that "it is indeed a noble cause to ensure that the state dots every "i" and crosses every "t" before removing the individual´s liberties." As many have commented, he was one of a kind. This world could use more humans like him. May his memory be a blessing.

I am sorry to read that another one of my Junior High and High School classmates has passed away. We played trumpet badly in the band as we progressed through our teenage years together. Allan and I lost touch after high school, each going our separate ways in university and then in the law. I do have fond memories of Allan so many (too many) years ago. I am pleased to see that he had a most fulfilling and well regarded career and a life too short but well lived.
