Allan ORR Obituary

ALLAN VINCENT ORR P ENG, BSC, LLD (HONOURS) BROCK Passed away in Creemore, Ontario on October 26th, 2008, in his 83rd year. Bor n in Hamilton, Ontario in 1925. Son of Irene and Adam, brother of Robert. Educated at McMaster and Queen's Universities. Graduated Metallurgical Engineering Class of 48 from Queen's. He was predeceased by his first wife, Norma (Neal) in 1964 and is sur vived by his beloved wife and best friend, Pauline (nee Shea). Also survived by his daughters Nancy Orr (Montreal) and Kathie Bollero and husband John (Palm Beach, Florida) and his son Ross and wife, Marilyn. His adored grandchildren Nathalie, David, Philippe and Michele (Mimi) Gaucher, Matthew and Alessandra Bollero and Stewart, Christopher and Meredith Orr (Toronto). Al retired as President and General Manager of Atlas Steels in Welland after 40 years of service to the Company. Atlas was his first and only career and he travelled the world for Atlas Steels in the back of a DC-10 in the early years. He was Past President of the Welland Club, Past Director of the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club and a member of the Granite Club in Toronto where he honed his curling and tennis skills. He spent his summers at his beloved far m in the Mulmur Hills, 'Hawbry Hill' and his winters were spent at Quail Ridge in Florida. After graduating from Delta Collegiate in the east-end of Hamilton, he joined the RCAF but was too young to go overseas. Stationed at Camp Borden he played his favourite sport, football. After the war he continued to play football at both McMaster and Queen's. He was also a member of the Hamilton Aquatic Club water polo team which won the Canadian Championship in 1949. In 1988 he co-captained the Canadian Curling squad which travelled to Scotland and won the Strathcona Cup. A great organizer, he regularly assembled 'friendly' curling trips to Scotland for friends from both Canada and the US. He never mastered golf. He was a great supporter of education. He was a member of the Queen's University Council, the Board of Governors at Ridley College in St. Catharines ('76'89) and for 16 years he worked closely with Brock University (5 years as Chairman) culminating in his receipt of an Honorary Bachelor of Laws degree from the school for his support. He was constantly fund raising for all types of worthy causes but the aforementioned schools were the largest benefactors of his tireless work. We will miss you very much 'Big Al'. A private family ser vice has taken place in Creemore. A celebration of his life will take place at the Station on the Green, 10 Caroline Street East, in Creemore, on November 21st at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy should be directed to the Allan V. Orr Family Bursary at Ridley College in St. Catharines. (www .rid leyc olle ge.c om). Friends may view Allan's on line book of memories at www.fawcettfuneralhomes.com
