ALLEN RUSSELL Obituary

Al Russell passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2025, at the age of 92. Beloved husband of the late Marion Russell, who died in 2013. Loving father of Paul (Kathy Caldwell), David (Cheryle), and Janet (Greg McFarlane). Cherished "Bompa" of Brennan, Kristen, Eric, Thomas, Samuel, Benjamin (Shannon), and Sydney. And proud "Great-Bompa" to Eleanor and Owen (children of Benjamin and Shannon). He was predeceased by his cherished siblings, Arlie, Jim, and Bob. He will be missed by his brother-in-law, Bob Everist. Al was a chartered accountant – a partner at Clarkson Gordon & Co., and then Ernst & Young after those firms merged. He retired on his 60th birthday in 1992 and enjoyed more than 30 years of retirement, playing tennis, hiking the Adirondacks, reading murder mysteries, and spending time at the family cottage in Haliburton. His "big move" in retirement was moving from the family home in North Toronto to Amica on the Avenue in 2018 (a block away, almost). He loved it there and enjoyed the people, meals, activities, and the movie versions of his beloved Broadway musicals. Thanks to everyone at Amica for adding such richness to Al's life. A private family service will take place at a later date. Al was an avid reader and longtime book club member, well into his 80s. He was also a proud supporter of the Toronto Public Library, an institution that continues to serve all, including Toronto's most vulnerable residents. In memoriam, any donation of any size to The Toronto Public Library Foundation would be greatly appreciated by his family.

Had the pleasure of knowing and doing work for Al for well over 20 years. You wouldn't find a nicer man, if you look. Always happy and friendly. I was a better person for knowing him. My sympathies to his son Paul and all of the family. Heaven's gain is our loss. Rest in peace, Allen.

My condolences to Al's family. I worked for Al at Clarkson's when I arrived in Toronto as a new recruit from the UK in the summer of 1968. He was a lovely, patient man, always a pleasure to be with, and I am grateful for the encouraging start which he gave me in the profession.
