AMY BEAMENT Obituary

May 18, 1932 - March 12, 2025 Amy Smirle Lawson Brough Beament passed away peacefully, with her four children by her side on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. She is survived by Janet, Alex (Barb), Jane (Stephen) and Julie (Chris). She was predeceased by her husbands, John Roderick Brough and John Arthur Beament; her parents, Smirle and Pearl Lawson; and sisters, Elizabeth Taylor and Isabel Lawson. Amy is lovingly remembered by her eleven grandchildren: Jennifer (Russ), John, Geoffrey (Lauren), Amy, Meaghan (Ryan), Adam (Alessia), Gillian, Katherine, Andrew, Nicole and Matthew; and her two great-grandchildren, Angus and Ronan. Born and raised in Toronto, Amy attended Havergal College, which is where she formed many long and lasting friendships. Throughout her life, Amy volunteered with the I.O.D.E. and the Junior League of Toronto. Amy had many special qualities that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Never be afraid to ask "why?", never fear standing up for yourself, your friends and your loved ones and trust cautiously. Since 1942, Amy spent every summer on Ferncliffe Island in Georgian Bay, the gathering place for her family and close friends. Many an afternoon she drove the OMC at record speeds to catch the "Penetang 88" at the Wah Wah Taysee dock - the daily meeting place for the community. She had an incredible memory for details and was a wonderful storyteller, regaling her adventures with Smirle as a young child and teenager. She was an accomplished chef, which led her to write and publish the cookbook, "Psychic Delights." She also loved riding horses, dabbling as a private detective, and loved dancing to Big Band Saturday Nights. Amy's warmth, generosity, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed by the multitude of friends she gathered throughout her life. She was a devoted mother, a trusted friend, and an inspiration to all who knew her. Her legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. A private family burial has already taken place. There will be a Celebration of Amy's Life that will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Rosedale Golf Club in Toronto, from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, and in Amy's honour, please raise a glass of "bubbly" and listen to Frank Sinatra's song "MY Way." As Mom was fond of saying, "it's five o'clock somewhere." She lived her life her way!

We were so very sorry to learn of your mom/granny's passing. Amy was one of a kind. A passionate woman and a great storyteller. We met Amy almost 40 years ago when our sister Barb became engaged to Alex. At a family gathering, Amy told the story about a homeless man (George?) who lived for years in the Brough garage on Teddington....until he accidentally burnt it down after which he disappeared into the ether. We've always loved this story as it told us so much about Amy. She was a compassionate woman who lived her life with honesty and integrity. She will be missed terribly. Please know we are holding you all in our hearts at this difficult time.

With our deepest condolences,
Drew, Mary, Clark and family

To dear Amy. I will never forget the forest time I met you in the elevator at McMaster university. It all began the of a journey. Being Julie´s roommate was special. Many trips to teddington and stories told. Many special times on Georgian bay. We always had a job to do when we arrived. Was worth it. ! The cocktail hour was always a blast. A beautiful memory for us. You were a very classy lady a special mother grandmother and friend. Now you have left this world which you made so much of and now on to another world. With love. The Hawkrigg family.

So many memories of the Van Patters and Broughs, on the slopes and to and fro between our cottages on Georgian Bay. Amy´s bigger than life character, voice and laugh are still so clear.
I will raise my glass of bubbly on May 6th and join Amy´s family and friends to toast a wonderful lady.
My condolences especially to Janet, Alex, Jane and Julie.

Amy was truly an inspiration to all who knew her. Truly she followed the adage that life is a journey, not a destination. As was mentioned, she was an accomplished chef, hostess and wonderful mother and friend. Her late husband, John Beament , gave me away at my wedding and that is how I came to know her. She was always welcoming and full of stories. I was always amazed how she maneuvered her boat like a pro despite shallow rocks near the island !
She will be sorely missed by all who knew her but we all have wonderful memories of this great lady!
