ANDRÉ BELAICHE Obituary
(1930 – 2026) It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. André Belaiche announces his peaceful passing on February 12, 2026, at Sunnybrook Hospital, in Toronto, at the age of 96, surrounded by family. Beloved husband of the late Arlette Belaiche. Devoted father and father-in-law of Oscar and Cheryl, Alan and John, and Marc and Ann. Proud grandfather of Kyle and Brooke, Mercedes and Milana, and Ella. Beloved son of the late Gaston and Rachel. Loved brother of Dolly Gasté and the late Charles Bellaiche. Cherished brother-in-law to Evelyne, Henny, and Albert. Treasured uncle, great-uncle, and cousin to many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, United States, France, Israel, and New Zealand, and friend to so many. André was born in Sousse, Tunisia, in 1930. He met Arlette while attending veterinary college in Toulouse, France, in 1951. They married in Paris in 1956 and immigrated to Toronto the following year to begin their life together. As new Canadians who arrived with modest means, they raised three sons in North York and created a loving and elegant home grounded in family, friendship, and culture. A graduate of veterinary college in France, André requalified upon his arrival in Canada and devoted his professional life to veterinary medicine. Through his decades at Yonge Street Animal Hospital and Rosedale Animal Clinic, he earned the trust and gratitude of generations of clients for his kind and compassionate care. André and Arlette shared a devoted, loving, and enduring partnership. During Arlette's illness, André's devotion to Arlette's comfort and well-being was unwavering, reflecting the depth of their bond and the strength of their shared life. Together they cultivated many deep and lasting friendships and shared a love of travel, food, cinema, music, and thoughtful conversation. André lived with quiet resilience and integrity. He valued intellect, hard work, discipline, and exacting standards and instilled those principles in his children and grandchildren. André never had a half-full, half-empty glass; his glass of life was always brimming with curiosity and discovery. He was consistently an early adopter of all things new and innovative, and was deeply passionate about living life every day to the fullest. André loved travel, good food, hockey, tennis, World Cups, and most of all, playing duplicate bridge. His warmth, wit, and resilience will be deeply missed. The family extends heartfelt thanks to his devoted caregiver, Mely, and to caregivers, Ella, Jovelyn, Sally, Lisa, and others, for their kind and compassionate care. The family also extends gratitude to the wonderful staff of Amica Bayview Gardens, Dr. Ruth Chiu, the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook, and Drs. Berger, Shapero, and Tarek. Funeral services were held on February 16, 2026, in Toronto.
