I arrived in Canada in Sept 1966 from UK ..having just completed a BSc at University of London ...I started at Mac on arrival and met Andrew as I was interested in political geography ...he supervised my MA (1967) and greatly assisted the supervision of my PhD (1969) ...a gentleman in every sense.

My first Thanksgiving in Canada was spent at his home: a gracious host with a wry sense of humour and wit, with a twinkle in his eye.

I send my deepest condolences to all his family.

One of the finest people and most inspiring geographers/teachers whom I have known. As both a student and colleague I greatly enjoyed my association with Andrew, and I will be forever indebted to him.

An accomplished man who lived a long and rich life and with his wife Mary raised a large family, all accomplished in their own right. My sympathies to the Burghardt family - immediate and extended - on their loss. The geography community (of which I am one - from U of Waterloo) lost a good one.

I had the pleasure of taking Dr. Burghardt's political geography course as an undergraduate student in the former Department of Geography in the early 1970s. During my teaching career at McMaster he was always supportive with his advice and encouragement. I was thrilled when he asked me to co-author the final chapter of "Steel City", published in 1987 to celebrate McMaster's Centennial and the fortieth anniversary of the Department of Geography. When he retired, Andy graciously gave me some his 35mm slides (used in his courses) which I, in turn, used in many of my own courses. He was a regular visitor to the department after he retired. During these visits he would ask about how the department was doing and he always had information or an anecdote to share. In November 2015 he attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the Lloyd Reeds Map Collection. His speech, which was entirely off-the-cuff, had the audience spellbound as he recounted memories of Lloyd Reeds and the history of the map collection. I will fondly remember him as a gentleman and a scholar.

In the mid 1970s, when I was a young Assistant Professor at McMaster, Dr. Burghardt asked me to lunch, though we were in different departments, and had never met. It turned out that he needed a Hungarian translator of his letters to relatives near Pápa, and their letters to him. So began a relationship that endured my moves to three universities, and ended some 15 years ago, when the last of those he knew in Hungary had passed away. Andrew was a wonderful man - an eminent scholar certainly, but what spoke volumes about his character were his letters, resonant with love and pride in his children and grandchildren, always kind, encouraging and loyal to relatives, some of whom he had never seen. God rest your soul, Andrew. You were special. Viszontlátásra, Emke Szathmáry

Andy was a member of St. Augustine's Mens Fellowship Group. His faith was an inspiration to all of us. In the photo here, I had just brought Andy and Mary to the Villa car show. He was always grateful to be picked up on Tuesday evenings at the Villa. Wonderful man.

Insightful , supportive, helpfully critical, and kindness personified - that is my memory of Dr. Burghardt. He was my Ph.D. supervisor in the early 1970s. Always helpful and supportive. I treasure the memory.

Very sorry to learn of Andrew’s passing, and the loss to his wife and family, the St Augustine’s community, Dundas, McMaster, and the Academic community at large. Seldom can a person be bigger the life in society and to family and friends possess humility.
