I was so sad to hear about Ann. We met many years ago when she attended some of the sessions I was doing at the AG Bell conferences. She was always so eager to find new ideas and ways to support her children and families at work. She had such an inherent sweetness. I know she will be terribly missed by all who knew her and especially to the many children whose lives were so positively impacted by her teaching.

I met Ann through teaching and enjoyed her company very much. She had a great sense of humour and showed tremendous dedication to the children and families in her school board. The tributes here are truly beautiful and captured the qualities we all loved in Ann. Rest in Peace, Ann.

Ann's life, like her art, was painted using a rainbow palette and was lovingly created with brushstrokes that expressed passion, knowledge and kindness. She captured the light in the world and the best in people. We are enriched to have shared her life canvas.

Ann is an inspiration for me as a teacher and a friend. She was always so respectful, dedicated and empathetic. Our paths crossed at two different schools - and over the years Ann helped me with my students as well as working closely with their families. She was always willing to get involved and nurture students with a love of reading books and great literature.
Ann had an appreciation of the absurd and sense of humour about the wacky things that happen in the classroom so we shared many laughs- but it was her passion for teaching and making genuine sincere connections with students that made Ann such an inspirational teacher. Over the years we were able to get together outside of school for parties, visits and celebrations - I was privileged to have Ann in my life as a friend and will miss her greatly.

I am very saddened to learn of Ann's passing. She was a wonderful colleague and friend. I met Ann in our Deaf & Hard of Hearing Department at YRDSB. She was one of the first people to introduce herself to me and show such grace and comfort to a new staff member. We became work friends and shared chats and laughs at our lunches and meetings. Ann showed me around my first few schools and introduced me to all the staff. She made sure I was set up in a good room to work with our students and always offered more help along the way. She was so kind, generous, thoughtful and protective of those she cared for. I remember how much Ann loved her students and how it gave her so much joy to listen to them speak, to converse with them and watch them play at our annual picnics. She loved being at the face painting station at our picnics! Her artistic talent was evident as she painted the children's faces with all sorts designs. She had a lot of heart for her students and their families and always wanted the best for them. As others have said, she was very passionate about her profession and a lifelong learner as well.
It was a shock to learn of Ann's illness and I know she fought bravely and courageously. Ann and I had a couple of conversations during this time. She recalled how she missed her parents, as they were also from Oakville. She was also so glad to have reconnected with her sisters and really enjoyed their talks on the way to the hospital. I know that she was grateful and happy for those moments and the loving bond she shared with family.
I will always remember Ann and think of her with great memories. She was one-of-a-kind and such a gentle and sweet soul and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to Ann's family. May she rest in peace.

I came to know wonderful Ann these past few years. She was the kind of person who looked for, recognized, and praised the talents/abilities of others. New, and still finding my bearings as an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf with YRDSB, Ann made it a point to mention intelligent things she thought I said, offer me resources, chat with me about my students, and inquired of my family. When I had a caseload in Markham, Ann sought me out and introduced me to CEC East – literally. She walked me around and introduced me to the staff there, praising me as someone special that they should want to meet! She showed me all the good spots to sit, the free coffee and tea and sometimes available treats! We had many nice chats, hearty laughs and times to discuss how to better serve our students. As iron sharpens iron, so my skills were honed and molded through these discussions. I was always amazed at her unceasing thirst for knowledge not just through attending conferences, and reading books but by the input she would seek from me and her other colleagues. Despite her vast experience and resources, she never thought she was above learning from someone else – even a newbie like myself. She gave so much credit to others that she hardly recognized her own.
When I think of her passing, I consider that some light in the world is gone but my faith like hers, sees beyond the ravages of the grave.
Death Be Not Proud
Johh Donne
Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.
“Where, O Death is your victory?
Where, O Death, is your sting?”
I Corinthians 15:55

It is with great sadness that I write this obituary for Ann Lovett, but, I know she would want us to chin up, smile and pay kindness forward.
Ann Lovett was such a wonderful, kind, and generous person that impacted the lives of many students, including my own. She was my itinerant teacher when I was in junior/senior kindergarten, and later on in the last few years of my high school. In both times, Ann went above and beyond to provide support to me and my family. In the kindergarten years, she would not only visit me at school, but also make house visits to help me learn to listen and talk, and complement the AV therapy I was receiving at the Phillip's House that was part of the North York General Hospital. I remember she used her amazing artistic skills to put together a scrapbook of drawings of various scenes with my family members in it. My parents used this scrapbook as a springboard to engage me to communicate where ever we go, whether it was in the car or at the park. Later on in high school, she would spend countless of hours helping me improve my school assignments, especially my written essays. She always had bright ideas to share to incorporate in the essays and was meticulous in her editing. Her stellar language skills never ceased to amaze me.
Ann would not voluntarily go 1 extra mile, but 1000 extra miles to help make your life easier. She would stand by your side to ensure that all your needs and accommodations are met. Ann was truly a one of a kind. Words cannot express the amount of dedication and compassion that she has committed to students like me. She certainly has taught me the importance of being calm, kind, to always keep learning, to never stop persisting at your goals in life, and to always have faith.
My sincerest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and students; we certainly have lost a special human being.

I am very thankful to Ann Lovett for being there for us, students, families, church, and teachers. I am very sad to hear about her passing but knowing that she is in good hands. She is truly blessed because she put devotion on teaching and connecting with students.
She took care of me when I struggled and I learned a lot from her. She shown her creativity in journals and we enjoyed reading together. I will miss her and treasure those memories that we created together.

Cecebe summers with my ‘blood sisters’ were wonderful. Ann would organize fun games and encourage me to try new things. I looked up (way up;) to her and admired her brilliance. I will miss her.

I feel such a sense of loss at the news of Ann’s passing even though we have not seen each other for many years. Ann was my roommate at the University of Toronto and friend throughout our years there. Although our lives went in very different directions after graduation, I always remember Ann with great fondness. I am not surprised to read what a great impact her life has had on those she loved and taught. My sincere condolences to her family.

I was so sorry to hear of Ann’s death. I worked with Ann as a hearing resource teacher in York Region. When Ann and I started with the board, there were three of us covering the region, Ann had the west, I had the north and Anne Wilner covered the rest. I remember Ann talking about good times with her sisters and parents at their family cottage, family was very important to Ann as were her students. Ann constantly went above and beyond in all aspects of her profession. I enjoyed her quirky sense of humour, her distinctive laugh and her kindness. I feel fortunate to have known Ann. Debbie Gray

I worked in the York Region Board of Education Hearing Department with Ann for 13 years. Ann was so dedicated to her students, their families and her role as an Itinerant Teacher. 44 years is a long time to follow-through in a career. Ann had a great sense of humour, asked lots of questions, and was open to new ideas. She will be much missed. Lots of hugs to her family. Marjie Welchframe :)

Ann was a kind, loving and thoughtful soul. She was soft spoken, humble and incredibly dedicated to teaching students who are Deaf and hard of hearing. For 44 years, she led the way with her passion, enthusiasm and wisdom. She was fiercely intelligent, well-read, and kept up-to-date with current research in the field, through conferences, workshops, reading and self-study. Above all else, Ann demonstrated an enormous capacity to love her students and families, dedicating time within and outside of the school day. Ann often accompanied her students and families to various medical appointments, assisting with their understanding of hearing loss, and providing moral support. In the words of her students and families, Ann was generous, sincere, friendly, selfless, creative, loyal, compassionate, organized, patient, respectful and considerate. She will be greatly missed by all those she touched in her long and illustrious career at York Region District School Board.
For me personally, Ann was a mentor, friend, and colleague. She inspired me to always reach for the top, to be a strong advocate, and to keep learning. Ann will be greatly missed. My condolences to her family, friends, former and current students and anyone she touched in her long and amazing career.

My name is Karen MacIver-Lux and I was one of Ann's first students. I have a severe to profound hearing loss that was diagnosed late in childhood, which meant I was woefully behind in my listening, speech, language, writing and reading and math skills...even in grade 6 and 7 (1984 and 1985). Many teachers who worked with me were overwhelmed and struggled to help me. Not Ann. Ann was (and always will be) the most important teacher of my life. My darling, sweet, and incredible teacher. She came into my life at a time I was being bullied by my classmates. So, Ann rushed to get to my school (two to three times a week) before lunch hour so we could eat together and give me respite (and hope). I loved every second with her. Her gentle, quiet, shy, bashful, loving, and extraordinarily polite nature touched my very soul. She told me beautiful stories of her parents, her sisters and her childhood. She comforted me during the most difficult times and was my strongest hearing and academic advocate. She shared her love of literature with me and introduced me to one of my favourite heroines who inspired my daughter's name (Emily of New Moon by Montgomery) and gave me a thesaurus which I still have to this day. She worked soooo hard with me to help me attain age appropriate skills in my listening, spoken language and academic skills...and she worked equally as hard to get me ready for life. Because of Ann, I was able to continue on (on my own) through high school and university. I became an audiologist and a LSLS auditory-verbal therapist. In 1997, we shared our first student together. I worked with him and his parents to help him learn to listen and talk, and Ann took over when he entered school and she worked with him until he finished high school. He is now a scientist...and Ann and I were (are) so proud of this young man who is already making the world a better place. Ann was a life-long learner...she never stopped attending conferences..and would often travel to far off places to attend them. And I loved seeing her at these conferences. It was a time for us to learn together...the student and the teacher sitting next to each other. We enjoyed so many breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Then...when I started giving conferences in Toronto, she attended every single one. I always looked for her in the audience...her smile and her eyes full of love, pride and joy gave me the most incredible courage! She had a wicked sense of humour and I loved her laugh. When she hugged me, I felt loved and cherished. She was calm, loving, selfless, and beyond wise (she was a mentor for me) to the very end. Anne...thank you for saving my life. Anne, thank you for being the best teacher of my life. Anne, thank you for being so proud of me. Anne, thank you for looking after the babies I taught...and thank you for the giving me the honour of working with you. Anne, thank you for being my angel. I love you..and miss you...and will always..always remember you. And to her family members...I am so sorry for your loss...what a great human being she was and I know you will miss her terribly. All of you will be remembered in my prayers. Thank you for sharing her with me..and so many other children. She truly made the world an accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful one for me and so many others with hearing loss. God bless all of you...and Ann...and her life will always be remembered by me. I plan to set up a trust/scholarship for children/teens with hearing loss in her name. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to learn more...or get in touch with me.
