Anna MCCOWAN-JOHNSON Obituary

ANNA McCOWAN-JOHNSON It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Anna McCowan-Johnson on Saturday, August 15, 2020. She died as she lived, with grace, dignity and on her own terms. She is survived by her loving husband, Donald K. Johnson, her two sons, Sean McCowan (Victoria McCowan) and Kaelin McCowan (Crystal Asher) and her two brothers, Henry and Michael Wilmot. As well as her stepchildren Virginia Johnson (Louis Trochatos), Carter Johnson (Diana Dumitru) and Jessica Johnson. She is loved and will be dearly missed by her seven wonderful grandchildren, Lily, Rheya, Tim, Carrie, Annabel, Graham and Andrew. She is finally reunited with her beautiful daughter Erin Gilmour who tragically predeceased her, who she shared with her first husband David Gilmour. Anna was born in Brantford, Ontario. After surviving polio and scoliosis at a young age, she was encouraged to take up ballet. As a teen, she attended Havergal College in Toronto where she honed her passion and skill for dance. Anna was a glamourous beauty who also modelled extensively before choosing to pursue dance professionally. She was taught and mentored by Gweneth Lloyd, co-founder of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet where Anna was further schooled and eventually joined. She continued her dance career on CBC TV where she met George McCowan, her second husband and father to Sean and Kaelin. Her entrepreneurial spirit and love of fashion led to Anna founding The Whimsey Tree, a children's clothing store in Yorkville, followed by a few years living abroad in Greece with her daughter, two sons, an afghan hound, a container-full of her prized Canadian pine antique furniture and her beloved and foul-mouthed parrot "Quero". In 1981, Anna met Don who would love her madly for the next 39 years. Don was an incredible husband to Anna and stepfather to her kids and made sure that they lived a wonderful life together full of friends, family and joy. He encouraged all her passions and took amazing care of her in every way. In 1983, she founded the Interplay School of Dance, which became one of the most highly respected ballet schools in Toronto with over 150 students going on to join the National Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg and the Quinte School of Dance. "Miss Anne" taught and mentored thousands of students and fellow teachers until she stepped down as founder and artistic director in 2008. Throughout her life she and Don were loyal supporters of the National Ballet Company and National Ballet School, and many other artistic organizations. Anna loved to entertain in her treasured home filled with a lifetime of curated antiques and was the consummate hostess. She was renowned for organizing her and Don's annual Christmas party, complete with the Grace-Church-on-the-Hill children's choir and their famous 20-foot Christmas tree. In summer, she delighted in hosting parties in her spectacular garden where her fabulous ensembles could only be outdone by the magnificent flowers she so adored. She always made people feel welcome and couldn't help herself when it came to imparting her lessons in impeccable manners and social graces to all those she loved -especially her grandchildren! Anna was a dependable and fiercely loyal friend. She took incredible care of everyone she loved, especially Don and her two sons who she was immensely proud of and spoke of to anyone who would listen! In times of trouble, her compassion and generosity knew no bounds. Without hesitation she would offer help, comfort, guidance - whatever was needed. Anna was a true force of nature and lover of life. In the last months of her life, she could be found in her bikini suntanning while her grandchildren swam and she and Don would dance to Neil Diamond after dinner. Anna epitomised grace, kindness and timelessness. She touched the lives of so many and will be deeply missed by all members of her family and wide circle of friends. Her family will honour Anna with a private gathering. There will be a Celebration of Life after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that in Anna's memory a donation be made to one of two favourite charities, the National Ballet Company or the National Ballet School. Anna was a wonderful and beautiful woman whom I met through my Mother Marie Damoff who was Sean´s baby nurse. She moved to California with the family when George went to work for Aaron Spelling. I´d been many times in Anna´s Toronto home where her parrot would carry on... making everyone laugh...her huge Christmas trees were legendary! She loved antiques and had a joy for life! My Mother and I tried to get in touch with her for many years to say hello and offer our condolences on the passing of Erin. Sadly my Mom passed in 2009 with hopes of seeing her again as well as seeing Sean all grown up! I´m happy to hear that she had a wonderful life for the years apart. My sincere and belated condolences to her family for their loss.

My deepest condolences to the family. I remember her as being so kind to me when I worked for her as a piano accompanist. I was a 17 year old in my first year at U of T, and because I didn't have a car, she was happy to pick me up and drive me to the lessons. She also gave the best gifts! I was so grateful to work with her for four years before I moved to pursue my graduate studies. I remember her as gracious, compassionate, sophisticated, and caring.

My sincere condolences to Sean, Kaelin, Mr. Johnson & Family on the passing of a great lady I knew as Auntie Anna. Hearing this sad news brought back so many memories of times shared with such a lovely lady. She would often pick up my younger sister, Patricia and I in her black jaguar and whisk us away to come for a visit and play with Erin. It was always a thrill for me & the jaguar remains my favourite car to this day. Many a fun-filled summer was spent playing games and swimming endlessly in their backyard pool. I can still remember the fragrance of Auntie Anna’s Bain de Soleil suntan lotion whenever she was outside with us.

Throughout the years, both our homes either had Erin at ours or we at theirs with the added treat of the occasional overnight so I remember many wonderful times with a very elegant lady listening to many stories. For several years, she invited Patricia & I to join she and Erin for an evening at the Christmas presentation of the Nutcracker Suite.

I will keep her in my prayers.

Dearest Anna was such a good friend to my parents, Donald and Geraldine Morrison... my youngest sister, Patricia was very best friends with her only daughter, Erin Gilmore!
We quite often joked that there were 6 children in our family as Erin often accompanied Patricia and all of us up to our cottage in Georgian Bay!
And Anna enjoyed winging the girls all over the place - Mexico - Greece!!

As a young teenager, whenever Anna was visiting, I'd sneak down the stairs and just be fascinated by this captivating woman ... she reminded me of a glorious swan - so elegant - with each movement of her hand so perfectly planned - yet so natural!
Anna, to me was an icon ... she didn't walk - she glided ... she didn't move - she floated ... she was so ethereal with this light that surrounded her - drew you in!
The Girl from Ipanema!!!

We were so fortunate to have Anna as a bridesmaid at our wedding! Anna insisted on flying down to Mexico to choose the bridesmaids dresses as I couldn't find exactly what I had in mind - but Anna knew and was thrilled to be so involved!! That was Anna!!

There are so many wonderful memories (and devestating ones) that take you into more stories, however, the most cherished one of all is hearing how loved she was later in life by husband, Don!

I loved reading how you danced to Neil Diamond while your grandchildren played in the pool!

We know the light has gone out in your life ... we are so very crushed and saddened for you, Don ... for her sons and many grandchildren!
Our one regret is we never got the opportunity to meet you and family before moving out west here to Vancouver, BC

With Sincere Condolences,

Virginia & David Reid

My Aunt is someone that I will remember as being ever compassionate and generous. She illustrated to me by word and deed what true "Class" embodied; to live your life with gentle kindness, consideration and elegance.
She instilled in me the importance of being true to one's principles, cherishing the joy in the natural beauty of each day, and the power of always having a kind word or anecdote to brighten another's day.
Anna had a selfless superpower in having the ability to bring a smile and happiness to others, and in doing everything she could to help make dreams come true for those who worked hard and believed in themselves. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who she touched throughout her accomplished life.

I will dearly miss you, Auntie.

My deep and heartfelt condolences to Don, Sean and Kaelin; and all family and friends. The words of the obit are so fitting this woman of beauty and grace. Auntie Anna was my second mom for so many years stretching back almost six decades, with Erin being my best friend since we were in diapers. I was blessed to have a visit with Auntie Anna a couple years back for a lovely lunch in the backyard; where I had spent countless hours playing and swimming in my youth and beyond. Auntie Anna, you have always held a very special place in my heart, and always will. I could go on and on with memories, but instead say may you rest in heavenly peace, reunited with your beautiful daughter. Special hugs and prayers.

I only met Anna a couple of times but knew of her fierce love and loyalty for family and friends through her relationship with our nieces, Rebekka and Shana. They both spoke of their love and respect for her, of her selfless support and how both she and Don were always available, ready to offer support and advice. Anna was a remarkable lady.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Don and his family.

She was the best boss I ever had. I remember one day she waltzed into one of my classes with a gift for me. she always left chocolates for her staff in our teacher boxes at Easter and Christmas. And was always giving us pay increases :) it was hard to work for anyone else.

Don:

Thank you for taking such great care of Anna. She could not have wished for a better husband.

As my Aunt, she set an amazing example and role model for me.

In particular, I remembered her stepping up to provide my sister Rebekka with a back brace, after she broke her back, sustained from a riding accident.

There are many other examples of her kindness too numerous to mention, and of course Anna could be very tough.... however she always wore a velvet glove ... when delivering that toughness.. we always wanted to please her and never wanted to meet with her disapproval.

She was a great force of nature that will be sorely missed...

With my warmest wishes to you and family for strength and endurance during this difficult time,

Your niece, Heidi Wilmot Smith
