Anne CALVERLEY Obituary

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, Anne lost her 3-year battle with cancer, passing away at home, just short of her 72nd birthday. As in her previous episodes with this insidious disease, she brought her unbounded spirit, determination and courage to the battle, never losing her positive outlook and her dignity. This was Anne in full force. Her passing has left a massive void in the life of her husband and best friend, Derek Lloyd; as well as her surviving siblings, Virginia, Rosemary, Ted, Roger and their respective families. She was predeceased by her loving brother, Bobbie, in 2019. Also saddened are close friends and colleagues who had the privilege of knowing Anne, and who always appreciated the richness she brought to these relationships. She leaves behind a legacy of personal and professional accomplishments for all to remember, underscoring a life well lived. Born April 20,1952, to Margaret Mary and Robert Calverley, Anne lived with her family in Lindsay, Ontario. Her high spirits and remarkable intelligence were evident early, and clearly projected the vibrant life she was destined to live. Her formative years were filled with success in many endeavors and found her at the top of the class all the way through school. Her academic prowess continued at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1973. Her father, a practicing lawyer, supported Anne's admission to Queen's University School of Law where she continued to maintain her high academic standing, graduating in 1976. After being admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1978, Anne set out on a path to greatness. Articling at a prominent Toronto law firm, she embraced tax law. In 1980, Anne moved to Calgary with a sharpened focus on energy taxation. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar, and with her unfaltering determination and drive, she began to earn a place with her legal and industry colleagues. Anne also started to give back to her professional world and her community. For years she served on the Boards of the Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. She was an active member in the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Canadian Bar Association. She became sought-after as a speaker at professional conferences and seminars. She contributed to the legal education of law students and mentored many young lawyers. She was honored with awards for her publications. The creation of the C. Anne Calverley Award to the student with the highest standing in tax law at the University of Calgary Law School is but one example of the recognition of her excellence. Further, in 2000, she received the prestigious appointment of Queen's Counsel from the Alberta Law Society. Anne and her longtime friend, Brian Carr, coauthored The Introduction to Resource Taxation in Canada. This two-volume text, published in 1996 and maintained with annual revisions, became and still is an important resource for advanced practitioners in energy tax law. Later, Anne wrote a portable volume of the previous work for a broader professional and industry audience. It delivered a clear and concise overview of tax issues arising in the energy industry. It was published in 2014 and was very well received. In 2006, Anne joined the partnership of Fenerty Milner Casgrain LLP (now Dentons) and was soon recognized as a brilliant tax planner and a productive partner. Her ability to simplify highly complex tax issues into workable solutions won the confidence of the firm's clients and partners. By then, the world-renowned Martindale Peer Review had recognized her preeminent status, the highest standing available. In 2016, after thirty years of practice she retired from Dentons, leaving an impeccable record. Away from her practice, Anne had many pursuits. She was a private person, spending time with a few close friends and family. She was an avid reader of fiction. When finished with one book, she would immediately pick up another. She was an outstanding gourmet chef and relished the discovery of new recipes to prepare and present at dinner parties. In earlier days she was a runner and remained proud of qualifying to run in the Boston Marathon. She valued fitness and could be found most mornings at her fitness club. She was a proficient golfer and enjoyed her many friends at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. She took up sailing and after receiving her captain's certification enjoyed adventures in the waters of Canada's west coast and the Caribbean. She was an excellent skier and enjoyed her summertime trips to the Post Hotel at Lake Louise. She travelled the world. Where life presented an opportunity, Anne embraced it and made the most of it. In 2013, Anne and Derek became partners in life. From that moment they spent almost all of their life together. They felt complete with each other. They travelled, golfed, skied, went to fitness and visited friends and family. In 2014, they acquired their residence in Naples, Florida, and took to the winter warmth and sunshine with enthusiasm. They married in August 2019, solidifying their extraordinary relationship built on love, respect and companionship. The devasting news of Anne's illness was met with firm resolve to fight it together. Through every clinic, every treatment, every setback, they never left each other. Their struggle brought them closer to the very end. The family extends thanks to the medical staff at the Tom Baker Centre for their care and support of Anne throughout her ordeal. It was Anne's wish to be cremated privately. Her friends and colleagues are invited to a celebration of her life on Sunday, April 21,2024, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the University of Calgary C. Anne Calverley Award.
