The Hon. ANTHONY CHISHOLM ABBOTT P.C. November 26, 1930 - March 23, 2023 With sadness we announce the passing of Anthony (Tony) Abbott on March 23, 2023. Tony died peacefully in Victoria, BC on March 23rd. The loving husband of Naomi Abbott for 68 years; he is also survived by his three sons, Douglas (Madeleine), Hilary (Patty), Timothy (Bridget Spaeth); six grandchildren, Bronwyn, Michael (Chelsea), Philippe (Jordan McGuire), Guy (Kelda Braden), Sophie (Joe Shackleton), Julian; four great-grandchildren, Remi, Loïc, Henry and Odette; and his brother, Lewis Abbott. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Schoettle. Born in Montreal on November 26, 1930, son of Douglas Charles and Mary Abbott. He attended Bishop's College School and Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec then law school at Osgoode Hall in Toronto. In 1974, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as the Liberal MP for Mississauga, Ontario. He was appointed to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (1976), Minister of State for Small Businesses (1977) and Minister of National Revenue (1978). After leaving politics, Tony and Naomi moved to the UK where Tony both practiced law and took ownership of a new small business, Debrett Ancestry Research, formerly part of the famous Debrett's Peerage & Baronetage. This pre-internet genealogical research company was an anticipation of what is now a worldwide obsession. On their return to Canada, Tony practiced law with MacIsaac & Company in Duncan and Victoria, BC while he and Naomi acted as gracious proprietors of Rosebank Cottages in Mill Bay, BC in the Cowichan Region of the west coast. A funeral service is planned for April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John the Divine Anglican Church, 1611 Quadra St., Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate financial donations in Tony's memory to Bishop's University, where lifelong friendships were formed.
