ANTHONY HAWKE Obituary

We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Anthony ("Tony") Hawke on January 6, 2026, at the age of 87. Deeply loved husband of Liedewij Hawke. Cherished uncle of Toronto's Richard and Carey Austin and great-uncle of Emily (Chris), Danny, and Marleigh (Eoin). He will be fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces in Western Canada: Michael (Debbie), Ginny (Dennis), Rob (Maggie), Steve (Debbie) and Cindy (Gary), his eight great-nephews and great-nieces, and by his nephew André (Marieke) in The Netherlands and his cousin Anna in the United Kingdom. He will be dearly missed by his cousins and friends Pat and Boa Burns. Tony, always a passionate reader, joined the publishing company McClelland and Stewart in the mid-sixties as their publicity manager and later sales representative. Then, in the early seventies, he founded Hounslow Press, a small exclusively Canadian book-publishing company, operating from the little tar-papered rented house on Hounslow Avenue in North York where he lived with his wife. His first book, Canada in Colour, 1972, sold extremely well, turning Hounslow Press into a respected small book-publishing company. A great many titles followed, photobooks on Canadian provinces, as well as poetry and short-story collections. He loved his work and his company flourished. In the mid-nineties, Kirk Howard, president of Dundurn Books, bought Hounslow Press, keeping its imprint and hiring Tony to run it. In his retirement years, Tony became an even more avid bridge player and remained a passionate reader. He was widely respected by colleagues and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Shetty and the staff of North York General Hospital for their concerned and supportive care. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Friday, January 16th beginning at 10:00 a.m. A service will follow in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. In Tony's memory, the family suggests making a donation to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
