ANTHONY (TONY) SMEARS On October 31, 2023, Tony passed away at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the age of 82. Born in Liverpool in 1941 to parents William (deceased) and Mary (deceased), brother to William (deceased) (Jean deceased), Margaret (John deceased), Peter (Sheila), Michael (Christine). Moving to Britain in 1966 he married his wife Jessica in 1969. Together they had three boys: Blair (Sandra), Adam (Mary Kathleen) and Cameron (Christina), and grandchildren Amelia, Livia, Conor, Chloe, Abigail and Emily. He made his mark professionally, building two successful careers. First in technology, which culminated in national leadership roles of major multi-national technology companies, both in Canada and the UK, followed by a career as a successful investment advisor at a major bank. Tony was curious about the world. He travelled extensively and lived in London, Toronto, Vancouver and Rome. With varied interests in languages, sports, music and how things worked generally, Tony was a man for all seasons. He had a discriminating appreciation for beauty, both in the natural world and creatively. A poetic soul, Tony had a piercing insight wrapped with gentle compassion. Compounded with his wickedly understated wit and mischievous sense of humour, Tony brought joy and richness to the lives of all who knew him. Not least of which are his surviving family members, who both grieve for and celebrate his life. The family will host a memorial service at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles - Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Saturday November 4th at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send a mass card or, if so inclined, make a donation to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at
