ANTHONY ALLEN LEAN "TONY" WRIGHT

ANTHONY ALLEN LEAN "TONY" WRIGHT obituary

ANTHONY WRIGHT Obituary

March 23, 1940 - November 24, 2024 Tony was born in London, England. His parents were Bernard Lean Wright (worked with MI5) and Margaret Lean Wright. Tony was in boarding school in England until he came to Canada at the age of 18, when he started his CA studies and training at Peat Marwick. After graduating with silver medal honours, he worked for Suncor for 30 years, working his way to positions of secretary, then treasurer. His work was very satisfying, and he was proud to say that he never had a dull day. When Suncor moved to Calgary, he was able to take early retirement at 55 years old. Tony was a great chorister and sang with the Mendelson choir, the Festival Singers, Massey College, Grace Church on the Hill and other choirs. Tony was also a mycologist, which he started after retirement. For a few years, he was secretary of the Mycology Society of Toronto, then for eight years he edited and published the Mycellium, the MST magazine. His enjoyment in the study of mushrooms was unsurpassed, and he was always happy to help and encourage others in identifying a rare mushroom. Tony had a great love of the English language. Many evenings were spent with friends and the Oxford dictionary by his side and puns flying across the room. There was time for playing bridge and Mahjong, and even having a running score playing Rummy with friends and family. On top of speaking English, French, German and some Spanish, he also decided to start learning Japanese when he inherited a Japanese daughter-in-law. Tony was a real gentleman, interested in every person he met. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Marianna, of 58 years, whom he met doing Scottish Country dancing that he learned while spending holidays in Germany, where his parents were stationed and that Marianna learnt in Belgium. He will be greatly missed by his children, George (Rie) and Nina (John); and his grandchildren, Theo (Marley), Emma, Kai and Bryn; his two cousins, Sara and Josephine; and his numerous friends. Tony was loved by all.

Tony, all of us who knew you shared moments of our lives with you as family and friends. We knew of your human qualities, a great man, husband, father and friend. Many moments to remember. Thank you, my dear SPY. I owe you and Marianna a lot, especially FREEDOM. As long as I live, I will be grateful for everything you did for me. More than family, you were like other parents. Tony, you were a great example to me of a husband and family man. As well as my English teacher. You will always be in my heart. Rest in peace. May God have you in his glory.

Marianna, I´m so sorry, just today, to read of Tony´s death. I passed your home just the other day and was thinking fondly of both of you. I remember the lovely dinner Jane and I had with you on Kamaniskeg Lake a few years ago: one of our connections as well as Tony singing with Colin a long time ago.

The Russian Kontakion of the Departed:

"Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy Saints: where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing but life everlasting. Thou only art immortal, the Creator and Maker of man: And we are mortal, formed of the earth, and unto earth shall we return: For so thou didst ordain, when thou createdst me, saying, Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. All we go down to the dust; and, weeping o´er the grave we make our song: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya.

"Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy Saints: Where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing but life everlasting."

My sincere condolences to you and all Tony´s loved ones.
