Arnold IRWIN Obituary

ARNOLD BEATTY IRWIN March 4, 1926 - August 12, 2021 The Irwin family mourns the passing of our family patriarch who passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones in his 96th year. Arnold was the beloved husband of Lynn who was the love of his life for 65 years. Together they raised four loving children: Scott (Heather), Craig (the late Darlene), Grant (Carol), and Marylynn (John Boyle) who will dearly miss him as they do their mother, Lynn who passed away in 2015. Arnold (Papa) will be missed by his 12 grandchildren: Courtney (Julian), Adam (Melissa), Jake (Caron), Brenlay (David), Brayden, Calynn, Grant (Channelle), MacKenzie, James (Laura), Keegan, Madison, and Jacklynn. Arnold had the pleasure of knowing and loving his 9 great-grandchildren who gave him immense joy in the later years of his life. He will be missed by, Max Arnold, Louise, Charlie, Millie, Bella, Collette, Frida, Piper, and Fox. Arnold is survived by his sister, Marilyn Boynton, and brother, Bryan Irwin (Betty). Arnold was predeceased by his brother, MacDonald (Mac) and his parents, Samuel and Beatrice. Arnold had a gift for making everyone he met in life feel special. This was shown in the enduring lifelong friendships he fostered throughout his life. From the group of trouble-makers from his Forest Hill School days, who were inseparable their whole lives, to the neighbors turned travel companions. Arnold joined the army after high school but mercifully the war ended before he could be deployed. He played a season of semi-pro hockey in Scotland, where he was known for his sharp elbows. Arnold attended the University of Toronto before joining his father Sam in his fledgling toy business, Irwin Specialties, later known as Irwin Toy. As a passionate and innovative businessman, Arnold grew the family business into an iconic household name with international reach. As President, Arnold took Irwin Toy public in 1969 and became Chairman of the Board. Even in business, lifelong friendships were made including the Steiner family of Cincinnati, which led to Irwin Toy introducing famous toy brands such as Care Bears and Star Wars into Canada. Arnold was a well-respected and liked leader in the toy industry. As important as the business was to Arnold, family was more important. As the family grew exponentially, Lynn and Arnold perfected the family trip. All were invited and nothing made Arn and Lynn happier than to experience the wonders of the world with their family. They travelled on a Russian Icebreaker through the Canadian Arctic, skied the mountains of the world, rode gondolas through Venice, and went on catamaran sailing voyages through the Caribbean. Closer to home, they welcomed and entertained countless friends of their kids and grandchildren at "The Ranch" near Thornbury. Arnold was a founding member of the Craigleith Ski Club and the longest serving member of the Toronto Kiwanis Club. Arnold and Lynn were dedicated to giving back to their community. But in keeping with his business acumen, Arnold didn't just want to give to a hospital; he wanted to fund specific research projects, meet with the doctors and medical researchers and understand what their donation would achieve. They gave particular focus to Cystic Fibrosis clinical research at Sick Kids Hospital, the Guided Therapeutics Surgical Oncology Program to enhance care for cancer patients at Princess Margaret Hospital, Alzheimer's research at Toronto Western Hospital and the Lynn and Arnold Advanced Perioperative Imaging Lab at Toronto General Hospital to help cardiac patients. The family extends their unwavering gratitude to Arnold's caregivers Demi, Lucita "Tiger", Noralyn, Jenifer and Jansy, who brought joy, friendship and dignity to Arnold's final year. In lieu of flowers, donations to Arnold's memory may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada which was close to his heart.

I have come to this sight at a time of introspection and fond memories of a favourite time in my life. The Irwin clan treated me very well during my time in Sales (1979-1985) and made me feel a `family member´! Mr. Irwin had a steady hand at the helm of the company and guided it successfully through major opportunities during his tenure. It has been a pleasure to know the Irwin family and an honour to work for them!

My condolences to the entire Irwin family. Arnold was an inspiration to me as a businessman and more importantly, as a family man. He had a wonderful way of always making you feel special, and he and Lynn often went out of their way to include myself and my family in their family events. He will be missed. Rest in peace Arnold.

My thoughts and prayers are with Arnold and his family. Arnold taught everyone whom he came in contact with class and what it takes to be a leader . His presence in a crisp white shirt and pressed suit you knew you were in good hands . God Bless.

I am a fan of Irwin Toys growing up in the late 60s & 70s on a tobacco farm in the southwest. Irwin Toys is a Canadian institution. It is recognized as a top brand for avid toy collectors around the world. Thousands of hours spent by generations of Canadian children pouring over Eaton Christmas catalogues for Irwin Toys. Such great memories!

My brothers and I were sad to hear of Arn's passing. My parents, Bert and Gord Crapper, shared many great memories with Arn and Lynn in Toronto, and at the old farmhouse outside of Thornbury. The antics that my dad Gord and Arn got up to with their buddies growing up are legendary, and will live on in our family stories for many more years.
It is the end of an era, for sure, and our thoughts are with your family.

Marylynn, I was deeply saddened today, to learn about the loss of your dear father. Arnold was courtly, charismatic and considerate. I was always delighted to see him and your lovely mother Lynn at the piano recitals, which were enhanced immensely by your talented children. I know how close he felt to you and your wonderful family and how proud he was of all of you. Dan joins me in conveying our heartfelt condolences and our affection to you, John, Grant, James, Jackie and your extended family.

I chose "Friend" as the term, but really I feel like family. MaryLynn has been a friend of mine for decades, with our families going back to the days of Blacks, Irwins, Morrisons and more. Many days and many nights I enjoyed with "Mr. and Mrs. Irwin", the "proper" addresses back in the day; whether it be at Craighleith, Thornbury, Florida or 147 Warren Road. CRAZY great memories mostly with ML, her parents, Craig, Scott and Grant. My deep heartfelt condolences to you and your families. "AB" will linger long in my thoughts.

Hello everyone, Sandra Leuty enjoyed Mr. Irwin, as part of a special group of 5 families, jammed into a little farmhouse, called The Thrills of Thornbury, where we skied all day, ate hearty suppers, watched hockey games, had sing songs, and laughed so very much. We kids are all so blessed for him in our lives. A real gentle man, wonderful, with a beautiful wife, and 4 children. I will remember him with much love and his kind, gentle way. Be with Lynn now, hold her close, and rest. You were one of a kind. Much love to your family, Sandra Leuty.S

Sending my deepest condolences to the Irwin family upon the passing of their wonderful patriarch. In July of 1971, I spent the month at Whitefish Lake with Marylynn & her grandmother. On weekends Mr & Mrs Irwin would join us. I will always remember how kind & considerate he was to me. I saw him again on Whitefsh Lake in 2016. His grandson Grant & my daughter Annie became friends, having worked together in TV production.
