PURDON, Dr. Arnold Lloyd

Died peacefully at the Parkview
Home in Stouffville on
Wednesday August 13, 2014 in
his 99th year. Loving husband of
the late Betty Purdon, and after
her passing on February 13th,
2001, Mary Cawthorne Purdon
Survived by his children, David
(the late Marie), John (Sue) and
Jane (Tom), grandchildren Cathy
(Alain), Mark, Sara (Dell), Heather
(Graham), Beth and Kate, great
grandchildren Trent, Oliver,
Daniel, Ani and Isaac, the
members of the Cawthorne
family who came into his life
through his marriage to Mary,
children, Ted, Nancy and Debbie
(Peter) and grandchildren, Cory,
Cameron, Anne (Patrick) and
John. He was born in Powassan
Ontario. Right out of high school
and after a three day road trip
south, he attended the
University of Toronto, earning
his medical degree after six
years of study. He served as a
medical officer in the Air Force in
World War II. He practiced
medicine in Welland and the
surrounding area for over 40
years as a Family Practitioner
and an Anesthesiologist. He
served the community as the
Chief of Staff of the Welland
Hospital, physician for the
Welland County Jail and Coroner
for the district. He played a
central role in establishing the
Welland Historical Society and
wrote 'A History of the Pioneer
Doctors in the Niagara Area.' He
enjoyed photography, music,
and playing Schubert and Mickey
Mouse on the piano with his
grandchildren. He researched
and documented a very
informative family history for his
children to learn about and
understand their family of origin
He enjoyed canoeing and
walking, and taking pictures of
wild flowers and sunsets,
especially in his cherished
rugged Northern Ontario. He
lived life to the fullest and had a
wonderful sense of humour that
he willingly shared with all. He
touched the lives of many. We
will continue to love him and we
will miss him. A Memorial
Service will be held at Holy
Trinity Anglican Church, 77
Division Street, Welland on
Thursday, August 21st at 2 p.m
In lieu of flowers, donations to
the Welland Hospital Foundation
would be appreciated with cards
available at the H.L. Cudney
Funeral Home, 241 West Main
Street, Welland who are in care
of the funeral arrangements
