Arthur BAILEY Obituary

BAILEY, Arthur Withall 1929 - 2007
The Bailey Family mourns the passing of local entrepreneurial visionary Arthur 'Art' Bailey (78) long time Okanagan - Fintry British Columbia resident on Sunday, March 18th, 2007. Arthur is lovingly remembered by his family: his devoted wife of 45 years, Ingrid, his two sons Stewart and Graham and their families, his sister Helen Graham, brother, William Graham and his many, many friends. Arthur was born in Hamilton Ontario, though his family had its roots in the Maritimes where the Baileys have had a long tradition of producing scientists and educators. Arthur, the oldest son of Helen and Loring Bailey would go on to inherit the honorary family title of Baron d' Avray Chevalier de St. Louis, an accolade bestowed by Napoleon 1st to a direct ancestor of Arthur's. It was a matter of family pride that Arthur would cherish his entire life. Art Bailey first came to the Okanagan in the fifties and immediately fell in love with it. In 1962 his company BC Properties Ltd. concluded a 3 year negotiation to purchase the storied North Okanagan property formerly owned by Capt. James Dun-waters known as Fintry and began to create a residential development there. Art would remain a resident of Fintry for the remainder of his life. He would later go on to co-author a history of the legendary Fintry property. During the sixties Mr. Bailey acquired the former Okanagan car ferry MV Lequime and re-built the ferry to resemble a lake paddle wheeler which became the tour boat Fintry Queen which still remains a fixture of the Kelowna waterfront. Condolences to the family may be forwarded to WWW.firstmemorialkelowna.com. A celebration of Arthur Bailey's life will take place at a time and place later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur's name may be made to the Central Okanagan Palliative Care Program located at 2255 Ethel Street, Kelowna.
