Arthur GLADSTONE Obituary

ARTHUR LESLIE GLADSTONE Arthur Leslie Gladstone, formerly of Toronto, passed away peacefully in Ottawa on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late William and Lily Gladstone of Montreal; and is survived by his wife, Kathleen Beall; his two sons, Joshua (Rebecca Schein) and Daniel (Jessica Liebster); his four grandchildren, Mabel, Eleanor, Thessaly and Naomi; his brother, David; and his first wife, Deborah Gladstone (nee Littman) (Lori Anderson). Arthur was a graduate of McGill University (B.A. and M.A. in History) and University of Toronto (M.Sc. in Public Health). He was Secretary to Ontario's Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (The Ham Commission) which led to a long and successful career as an executive with the Ontario Public Service, where he was instrumental in occupational health and safety reform and employment standards. His sons will always appreciate the decisions he made to prioritize his family at crucial times in his career. With the luxury of early retirement, Arthur went on to have almost 20 years doing what he loved most: riding, training and caring for horses. After his retirement, he and Kathleen moved to Alberta where he spent time riding in the Kananaskis mountains. They then returned to Ontario where he continued to raise, train and ride horses on their farm in the City of Kawartha Lakes. He was active in his community, volunteering with several organizations, including the Millarville Public Library, the Kawartha Field Naturalists, the Carden Field Naturalists and the Ontario Woodlot Association. In addition to horses, he had a special love for birds and spent many happy hours birdwatching. He was also an accomplished canoeist, an enthusiastic nature lover and a proud cook. Arthur loved his family, planet earth and the animals who live here. He will be greatly missed. Special thanks to the health professionals at the ALS clinic of the Ottawa Hospital. At his request, there will be no funeral. Donations in his memory may be made to UNICEF Canada. In recognition of his long time in Toronto and his many friends there, a gathering in his memory will be held in Toronto at a date and location to be determined. I am lucky to have worked with Arthur Gladstone as my immediate supervisor at Ministry of Labour Central Region, for many years. We moved to the Downsview office and we worked together on designing the new office. I was pleasantly surprised to know of the unique quality of Arthur. One day at lunch I brought to the office a piece of durian and asked him to taste it. Durian has an objectionable pungent odour. He look at me straight in the eyes and said sure I will try it. He actually loved it and we had a few durian tasting experiences afterwards. Being open-minded and trusting his friends around him is his innate personality! Rest in peace Arthur!

I was the deputy minister at Labour for some of the time he was in charge of health and safety for the province. He was one of the most committed public servants I have known and someone with absolute integrity who cared passionately about the safety of Ontario workers. He worked hard to ensure the government met the standard of care he believed in and was very disappointed whenever it fell short. I am delighted to hear how happily and well he lived his life after he retired.
