Arthur TRUAX Obituary

Arthur Donald Truax, B. Comm., M. Ed.

Art Truax entered into rest at Ross Memorial Hospital on Wednesday November 30th after a courageous fight with cancer in his 77th year.
Art leaves his wife Barbara (Lewis) and his two children, Sherry Giltenan (Neil) and Tim Truax to carry on. His grandchildren, Tom and Sarah Giltenan, will miss him for his constant interest, thoughtfulness and advice.
He was predeceased by his parents Everett and Margaret (McMillan) Truax and his brother, Reginald, all of Lindsay. He will be sadly missed by his sister in-law and brother in-law, Doll (Lewis) and Ted Curtin of Burlington, his nephew Mike (Wendy) Curtin and his children, Samantha and Sean, his niece Lynn Curtin-Lange (George) and their two children, Eric and Christopher of Waterdown, Ontario .
His insight, humour and wit will be missed by all his relatives, friends, and acquaintances. His short stint with Imperial Oil Limited was followed by a 36 year dedication to education that included Vice-Principal and Principal of Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Superintendant of Schools with the Trillium Lakelands District School Board.
Art entered municipal politics early while in his educational career serving as a municipal councillor on Lindsay Town Council in the 60's and 70's. Then, as he was retiring from education in the mid 90's, Art re-entered the municipal arena, being elected as a councillor to the Town of Lindsay's Council. In 1997, he was elected as the last Mayor of the Town of Lindsay and then elected as the first Mayor of the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2000. This latter role demanded the ability to guide and blend many hamlets and villages into one cohesive, representative government.
Always interested in athletics, he was active in many sporting activities. In particular, his love of golf and hockey, particularly the Toronto Maple Leafs, were known by any close enough to wager.
Art, along with his 1951 Ontario Lindsay Midget Championship Hockey Team, was inducted into the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also a past member of the Rotary and Probus Clubs of Lindsay, Past President of the Kinsman Club of Lindsay, Past Chair of the Lindsay Police Services Board, past member of the Workforce Development Board, and a contributing member to St. Paul's Anglican Church, Lindsay.
Following cremation, family visitation will take place at the Mackey Funeral home, 33 Peel Street in Lindsay, on December 6, 2011 from 4-7 pm. A Memorial Service of a Celebration of his Life will be held on December 7th, 2011 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 45 Russell Street, Lindsay at 11 am. Reception and further visitation will follow in the Church Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church Youth Ministry, the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame, the Kawartha Lakes Food Source or to a charity of your choice
