Ashley TIDY Obituary

ASHLEY WILLS TIDY M.Mus., M.Ed., FRCCO, FRCO. (Ch.M.) 1940-2023 Ashley died peacefully on Saturday, November 4th, at Michael Garron Hospital. Loved and missed by Shelley, his wife of 53 years, and by the family of which he was so proud: daughter Wendy (Tim Boychuk); son Rob (Mandy); grandchildren Rebekah (Jacob Nethercott), Jonathan, Anna, and Elizabeth Mason, and Trevor and Jesse Tidy. Dear brother-in-law of Sandy and the late Clyde Fawcett, David and Sharon Varley, and Peter Varley. Warmly remembered by Stephen Mason. He is also survived by wonderful extended family and friends in Canada, the U.S.A., and the U.K. Ashley was predeceased by his parents, Frank (1959) and Mildred (1998) and by his brother Wilton (1996). He was the consummate church organist, choirmaster, singer, teacher, 60-year Mason, and Shriner. He was also a brave, kind, and patient man. Grateful thanks are due to the MGH and UHN physicians and staff for their care over many years. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles - Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 19th, with a Masonic service taking place at 6:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Paul's Bloor Street, 227 Bloor Street East, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 20th. The service will be live streamed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Toronto Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (rcco.ca), or the St. Paul's Heritage Fund (www.stpaulsbloor.org/give), would be appreciated by the family. Ashley Tidy was an exceptional choir director and organist who made a big impression on the young choristers who sang for him at St. Hilda's Church back in the early 1960s. When he travelled abroad during the summer he sent a post card to my sister, and me, our first from overseas. Over many years he scanned obituaries for the names of those he had trained and found that of our mother. Though he could not attend that funeral he sent us a tribute that was much appreciated and that allowed us to reconnect after decades. How sad it is to learn of his passing. Like the heroine in Babette's feast he will so gladden the hearts of the angels in heaven.

My sincere and very deepest condolences to the family. Mr. Tidy was a big part of my highschool life that I'm very grateful for. He believed in his students talented or not. He was one of those golden teachers who could and did change lives, I know that for a fact. I'd definitely would be there but I now reside in New Brunswick but will be there in thought and mind. RIP Mr. Tidy and thank you very much.

My sincerest condolences to the family of Ashley Tidy. It was a privilege to have Ashley Tidy play the organ at St. John's Milliken Presbyterian Church shortly prior to his death. He really blessed our services with his excellent organ playing. His rendition of the tune "Happy Birthday" was simply marvellous and memorable.
He will always be remembered with fond memories. May he rest in peace.

Yours sincerely,
Tim Suphal.

So sorry to hear about this loss. Ashley was my first choice as a substitute at Northlea United. I could always count on him and he was much appreciated by the choir and the congregation.

Ashley was an old friend from high school and I lost touch with him when I moved away from Canada long ago. He was a good, kindly, generous person and a most wonderfully gifted musician. My condolences to his family and friends.

Deepest sympathy to family and friends.
Ashley was a very pleasant man. Enthusiastic, decisive and it was a joy to listen to him play.
I met him at choir practice one evening 60 years ago when he had taken the position of organist at St. Hilda's Anglican Church (Fairbank). He approached me and took me from the boy's section and moved me to the men's section beside my father and Uncle Tom.
Rest in Peace Ashley, with the other masters of your craft.

Ashley was the only one of his class and the best musician we ever had at St. John's Milliken Pres.
Quite a gentleman and a professional. His music provided an aura of "holiness" in my services.
"The music is gone but the melody contnues; He is most likely doing the same in heaven. May he Rest in Peace.
