AUBREY CLIFFORD LYNN HOLMES

AUBREY HOLMES Obituary

Lynn was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland, on December 13, 1935, and died in Sunnybrook Health Sciences on March 5, 2025, where he left this life as gently as he lived it. Predeceased by his parents, Rev. Albert Nicholas Holmes and Minetta (Brett) Holmes; by his brother, Douglas Holmes; and son, Christopher Holmes. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty (Davis) Holmes; his treasured son, Nicholas; loved daughter-in-law, Elissa De Falco; and adored granddaughters, Olivia and Marina. Also by his brother, Robert; sister-in-law, Marilyn; niece, Kerri; grandniece, Adele; and several cousins. After receiving an MA from Queen's University, he taught at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Seneca College. In retirement, he volunteered with the Friends of the Library at Trinity College in the University of Toronto. He will be missed by many friends, neighbours, and former colleagues. There will be a private gathering to remember Lynn and celebrate his life. The family wish to thank the medical team at Sunnybrook for their exemplary care. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Sunnybrook Foundation would be appreciated.

Happy memories of starting teaching with such a gentle and encouraging colleague. Evenings with Lynn and Betty were legendary. When I became a coordinator, I approached him quite shaky and nervous, only to be welcomed and supported. Everyone walked away from meeting him standing a little taller.

Betty, whenever I drive through Wallace, I try to figure out where you and Lynn lived. He was such a nice man and always good to chat with. I remember CALL conferences enjoying talking to him. Doug and I send our condolences.

Oh Betty! I was so sorry to read of Lynn's death. Although it's been many years since I've seen either of you, I have very clear memories of first you at Jane and Lawrence, and then later both of you at Newnham. I did not know Lynn well but he was very helpful and kind to me when I first arrived at Newnham. He had many friends and colleagues who were very fond of him and will miss him. My sincere condolences. ( Kathy)
