Audrey HAWTHORN Obituary
HAWTHORN, Audrey Genevieve Engle
Born November 25, 1917 in Llewellyn, Nebraska and died November 18, 2000 in Vancouver. She studied anthropology at Teacher's College Columbia University and Yale University. She became the first curator and guided the development of the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia and, in 1968, was appointed Associate Professor of Anthropology. Her writings included Art of the Kwakiutl Indians, Kwakiutl Art, and Labour of Love, which is the early history of the Museum. Audrey Hawthorn was made a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of her achievements and was awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees by Brandon University and the University of British Columbia. She is survived by her husband Harry Bertram Hawthorn, her children Margaret and Henry, and her grandchildren Laura and Christopher. At her request, there will be no funeral service.
